To be honest, the exquisite pieces and expert knowledge enjoyed by some members are a bit intimidating to a price-conscious novice like me. I do like the swords I have, no doubt, and I’m thankful to have them. While I like to share my toys, I must acknowledge that there are some truly impressive collections ‘round here.

The 1822 LC was the only sword in my collection that I specifically sought out. (An SBG member really hooked me up.) It really is a very sweet (and relatively affordable) sword.

All the others just kinda happened to be interesting, available, and under my price limit when my budget had a few bucks in it.

Looking at each one now, I can remember where my interests were, and how developed my knowledge base was, when I got it.

For example, many of the substantial shortcomings of my low end katana are glaringly obvious to me now. Yet they are still okay swords, and I’m quite fond of them. When I was first learning about “real” swords by dabbling in katana and niuweidao, I thought I might eventually save up a “lot” of money for a really nice DF niuweidao or maybe even catch a higher level RK/Hanwei katana on sale or something. I would’ve been quite surprised to learn that I would end up focused on antique 19th Century Euro military sabers.

Anyway, this has turned out to be a rewarding hobby shared by great people.

I 100% agree with Jordan (I usually do).

I haven’t handled an 1882, but the 1822 is fearsome and a joy to handle; especially the first “series.” Plus it has some historical significance/prestige. If you can, get one while nice examples are still relatively common and affordable. Just mtc.

I see a there is a reasonably nice 1822 (needing some cleaning but not a disaster) on E-Prey for $400. Now I can't afford that now but that is a price within the realm of possibility when summer (more hours at the hotel) rolls around. The 1882's I see are cheaper so, knowing me, I'll probably end up with one of them sooner.

If a scabbard is important to you, you should save up about 525 and then wait for a good one to show up. If not, and if you're okay with a later date (mine is 1876 and I find it very manageable in the hand, biggest difference is quality of the build as far as I know) then I say go for it.

Just a few notes, pics, etc.

Overall quite good condition. Correct scabbard present and intact. All components are tight and in good condition. Blade rings when struck.

Hilt appears complete and original except as noted. Leather grip and twisted wire are intact and tight, and appear to be original. Peen seems to be center punched, and leather washer appears to be a replacement. The ricasso seems appropriate in length (not shortened by "re-shouldering" the blade) and the peen seems otherwise intact. Pommel is also slightly canted. I think the peen is the original but modified. As always, I'm not an expert, and I welcome information, insight, and being corrected.

Blade is undamaged, with no bends, chips or rolls. Signs of sharpening and light cutting are present. The cross-sectional geometry seems correct, the polish is uniform, and there is no secondary bevel (so no belt sander/dremmil tool disaster). Fullers, stamps and spine scrollwork are nice and sharp. Some black patina is present, but not much considering its age.

Scabbard is correct for the m1822 and is complete. Two dents are present (one on each side), but do not affect proper use. Sword is held snugly and draws freely. Scabbard is not marked with identifying numbers, so I cannot be sure it is original to the sword.

Overall, this is a pretty nice sword, at least for shallow-end swimmers like me. I am very happy to have it.

The windings are "lazy," and the wire itself is quite thin. Originally, I thought it looked like a poorly researched amateur job. However, after reading a lot of excellent information on the hilt construction of this sword model that was very kindly provided by Uhlan, I now think the thin-gauge wire was chosen because it would probably be impossible to thread thicker wire under the pommel without disassembly. Judging from what Uhlan wrote, cleanly threading twisted wire even this thin would be quite challenging. So maybe not as amateur as I thought.

The peen cap seems unmolested, but any decoration that may have once been present has been cleanly removed.

The blade is undamaged, with no bends, chips, or rolls. This is an officer's sword, and there seems to be a complete lack of any stamps/poincons. The fullers are still nice and crisp, and the spine scroll-work is sharp. I don't have a photo of the spine at the moment. I'll endeavor to take one at some point and add it in an edit.

The scabbard is correct for the m1829 officer's, with the mouth fitting precisely to the sword's hilt recess.

This is a very pretty sword in really good condition. I am very pleased to have it.

Quick update:

Okay, so today I plunked down a down-payment to have a Elmslie type 3b falchion made by L. Driggers. I was pretty excited, but it’s going to be several months before my sword comes up in his que. I was not really sure where I could store it, so I felt a minor pang of irresponsibility-guilt ordering up a commission. At least I would have a few months to make room, right?

Of course, literally the very next actual minute - while I was still online pm’ing Lyn regarding some details - Wes Beem puts up for sale a sweet fantasy-hilt unokubi zukuri wakizashi at a ridiculously great price. So, naturally, I bought it immediately.

So much for “no new swords for a while.” Okay, I may have a problem...

Quick notes and a few pics.

This is the only antique sword I have ever bought from a dealer. All my other antiques, and almost all my other swords and knives, I bought from individuals on SBG. What a great community and fantastic resource. Anyway, the dealer photos were better than any I could produce, so I used them here. I saw this sword online, and it just kinda spoke to me. It looks like a serious world-savvy side arm that is fully prepared, but not really eager, to take on all challengers. As with nearly all of the items in my little blade family, this sword just kinda caught my eye when I happened to have a few bucks in the hobby fund. At the time, I knew nothing about Italian swords at all. Since then, Uhlan published a very interesting article chock full of useful hard-to-otherwise-find information about Italian swords and history. While it doesn't specifically cover the m1833 art'y, it does mention its m1855 replacement, and gives a lot of insight into the militaries of the Italian peninsula in the Nineteenth Century.

Anyway, my particular saber is in pretty decent overall condition. The correct scabbard present and intact. All components are present, tight and in good condition, including both langets.

The hilt appears complete and original. The leather grip and twisted wire are intact and tight, and appear to be original. Upon close inspection, the leather appears to be re-stained to help conceal its wear. It looks like the leather and binding wire were stained together, then the high points of the wire were polished out again. To be honest, that isn't really off-putting to me. When I gently push the wire to the side, the impression on the leather underneath matches the twist in the wire. Perhaps a collector would balk, but for me it pretties the hilt up a bit, and confirms it is all original.

The steel parts of the hilt have a good helping of uniform "salt and pepper" patina, with slight tactile-evident pitting. (This kinda renders any qualms with the grip leather moot anyway.) Since everything is still present, tight, and structurally sound, it really just adds to the character of the sword to my eyes. If I get truly inspired, I might eventually attempt a gentle restoration with high grit sandpaper and metal polish.

The peen seems to be original and unmolested.

The blade is undamaged, with no bends, chips or rolls. I do not see any signs of sharpening or cutting, but the edge is acute enough to be considered a "live" blade. The fullers are uniform with nice crisp edges. Some black patina is present, but not too much considering its age. At a quick glance, it looks pretty clean, especially contrasted against the hilt. A closer look reveals light but widespread black patina, though there is no pitting. I think a bit of careful work would coax forth a beautiful finish. Again, though, a bit of rough-and-tumble kinda suits the sword's personality anyway.

The scabbard is correct for the m1833. It is complete and in good condition. The sword is held fairly snugly and draws freely. The scabbard looks like it has seen service through a few cold rainy seasons, but has suffered only cosmetic consequences.

I don't really know how an art'y sword should handle, but it feels sturdy and maneuverable, and inspires confidence in the hand. Overall, this is a nice sword. It isn't beautiful, but manages some panache. I like it.

That's exactly how one should handle. Looks great! I really like foot sabres for troopers. Cavalry heft but infantry size.
