The title basically speaks for itself:

When I saw his finger I said to myself “he’s broken that sucker a few times”. Later in the video it comes out that he had broken it dozens of times. Coconuts are tough makes me curious about following through the idea of making armour out of them.

Impressive. I figured he was going to use the equatorial crack trick (like you can with your head), but he bored right through a fresh one.

I'm not sure if that's dedication or insanity...

Perhaps it's dedicated insanity Maybe he's just insanely dedicated? ... Haven't considered it. But it's possible

Clearly this guy has invested a lot of time and effort in order to do this. I wonder if he just thought one day, "I don't know anybody that can punch through a coconut with one finger. Maybe I should do it." I'm curious what kind of nerve damage he has. If he can even feel anything in that finger anymore?

Coconuts are tough makes me curious about following through the idea of making armour out of them. There's precedent, too! They briefly show an actual photo of historical coconut fiber armour in the video itself.

If he can even feel anything in that finger anymore? Judging from his reaction at mark 8:16 he can.

Yeah, I cringed a bit at that part.

Over all its kind of neat. But it's not a skill I would bother with

What they needed to do is add a segment with one of those ballistic dummies like on Deadliest Warrior and have him puncture through that in mulitple vital spots to see how "deadly" his finger is.

Having been in Chinese Traditional Gung Fu for a LOOONG time, I know that these are just `tricks`similar to stage magician stuff, and has little if anything to do with real Chinese Martial Arts. That one finger trick is not going to save him in a all out street fight.

I've been taught Chinese kungfu and while it is possible to do this after _years_ of training/abuse, it is utterly pointless. And as Wes above me said, very far down the list of skills you'd want in a real fight.
Martial arts should promote health and avoid injury, quite the opposite of this.. there are much better things to spend your time and effort training. If you want to poke holes in coconuts get a proper tool for $10 or so at the store in less then an hour, save yourself a decade of hurting your poor finger.
I remember one of my students being obsessed with breaking bricks, one day he proudly showed me a big broken brick at his house.. problem was his hand was swollen to 3x the size of his other hand.. fortunately no fractures but I had to tell him that's not why we train.. wanna break bricks go buy a hammer.

This is a rare skill in martial arts because so many people training to do it die in tragic nose picking accidents.
