It is basically/mostly diluted hydrochloric acid emeraldcoatings.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/stainless-steel-blackener.pdfI have seen some repeated and polished results that are quite strikingly glossy black but I went with aged. There are other solutions from them as well and other sources for these compounds. To add, it is the copper sulfate in it that produces a weird tone to it you can see in one of those pictures of the mort.

Now that I think about it, I once turned a chromed scuba regulator cover black by soaking it in vinegar too long. Oops.

Oh by the way I got my Hanwei Tinker 9th Century Viking sword in. I was very pleasantly surprised, it is a really nice sword. Blade is straight, no misaligned fittings, nothing loose, good edge but not a great one and of course the Ugly grip which we all know about. A new grip and color will be coming, I don't like black grips. If you can find one it's well worth the mid two hundred price tag.
