Hello, I would like to see if you guys could please help me identify this sword. I am due to look at it tomorrow and I would like to know what the engravings mean, and if it is a quality blade or a cheap knockoff. The person says it was given to as a presentation gift by a large company as some sort of bonus along with the stand and plaque and knows it cost them $1200. Any input would be great. The person says the blade says Taiwan--does this immediately make it a cheap knockoff in itself? Thank you.

How much are they asking for it? Do they know what company? Does it sound too good to be true? Are they asking more for that sword than say this ( sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/custom-katana.html) sword, and if so why do you want that sword more? Is it because it's a presentation gift? I personally wouldn't pay over $100 for a sword with any question marks hanging over it no matter how many smiles, oaths, and promises the seller made. You ever watch Pawn Stars? I've seen actual authenticated Civil War sabers go for sub $800, so when it comes to "Take-my-word-for-it"s coming from one guy... mind your wallet. Anyway. Had a look. Can't read all of it. Looks like "Very much ---- ------ ------ silk/smooth water." etc. Traditional characters, but nothing super profound.

Stay far far away. You can get better than that for 60 bucks.

I have this exact same sword, minus the plaque...I bought it when I was 14 and had no idea wtf swords are, it's stainless steel and cost me about $140 back then, but tbh it's useless and worthless.
I still have it shoved far far into my storage room of stuff I need to throw away.

Here you go, I went and fetched it out of storage and took a picture for you, just so you won't have any doubt and the guy can't try to weasel money out of you with some BS story...If memory serves me right it's a United Cutlery Tachi.

That is an eye sore, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Get a real sword, you'll be happier.

Whenever you're buying a sword anywhere close to that much, the seller should be able to show you exactly where it came from, what kind of steel its made of, who assembled it, etc.
Thats clearly not the case here and its because some jerk is trying to rip you off. Just because its metal and over three feet long doesnt mean its legit.

It's a cool looking display piece, but as everyone has said, the dude is trying to rip you off. Musashi makes acceptable low budget real katana. I don't own any, but a friend does and it's a nice sword for cheap cheap cheap. There are many real katana companies that make good swords for WAY less than that dude says that peice is worth.
