Hello Everyone,
Does anyone here own this katana?
casiberia.com/product/bamboo-katana/sh1002
Any comments regarding its durability and suitability of use for occasional tamashigiri?
Your comments would be most welcome.

Why is it unsuitable for cutting?

I have never handled this but this sword has been around for a while. The problem I think is that it does not have a metal fuchi and so over time the tsuka may split or it may just happen suddenly.

The lack of a metal bolster doesn't seem to be any kind of a big problem for seaxes, though. Unless the grip is otherwise of suspect quality, I'd worry more about it possibly being slippery (and definitely wouldn't try thrusting, in any case, what with the absence of anything to stop your hand from slipping onto the blade).

I don’t believe there will be a splitting issue. Also the tsuka can be wrapped with a number of materials to reinforce and to possibly improve the grip. If you plan to walk with it I’d suggest putting something on the tip of the saya, otherwise that will become damaged quickly. I made a tip from a scrap piece of rubber shoe sole obtained from a shoe repair shop. I do have the one below and also another by Hanwei that has since been discontinued. So far as reviewing mine my thoughts would parallel the first reviewer’s. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2267&name=Hanwei+Blind+Fury+Zatoichi+Sword+-+Natural#Reviews

The generic term for these is "shikomizue". They usually look more like a walking cane and less like a shirasaya, and commonly don't have a true katana blade in them like this one does. My only caveat is to notice that this one is selling for as much as some originals I've seen, so you might look around the antiques some before buying it.
