Ooooooo! Maybe I'll save for one. Always wanted a slender cut and thrust from that time period.

Am betting its the same as their old hanwei side sword. That one waas a bit light in the blade, but genrally well regarded

Blake at CAS told me that the blade is 3" longer to help give a little more authority in the cut. I have not handled one.

The biggest change to the sharp Side Sword are the longer blade (~3") and the solid wood core and leather wrapped grip. Blake

Looks like the POB is further forward than it was on the older version... to be expected with the longer blade.

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

Looks like a pretty nice cut n thrust sword, I'll have to check one out sometime soon. The stats look just right. Anyone know where you could see a full view of the guard?

So, I've been waiting for this new Side Sword to come out for a few months and now that it's finally been announced, I'm loving it! I've wanted one of these ever since I missed out when they were being discontinued, I've always regretted that. I almost pulled the trigger on one then but I kept re-reading 'horror stories' about the plastic handle on the original version needing to be replaced, leaving me to miss my opportunity. I've always liked side swords, "military rapiers", "cut and thrust swords", "sword rapiers", or whatever you like to call them. I remember reading the old MRL catalog back in the 90's and wanting one so bad (they had a few back then!), but I was too young and too broke to get one. As luck would have it, by the time I got back into swords and started buying some, Windlass had discontinued them all and they were as rare as hen's teeth. It looks like the two biggest complaints about the original have been corrected this time around. 1) The handle has a wood core and a leather wrap. While I really, really liked the metal wire-work of the original, this should be a more robust option compared to the plastic cored one. 2) After picking the brains of a few folks who have owned or handled the original version, a lack of blade presence in the original was what I heard the most. This version has an additional 2.75" of blade length and a PoB an extra 0.75" further down the blade. It looks like they also increased the handle an extra 1". Taken together, I would imagine this version still retains it's excellent balance with just a little more blade presence. Plus, the longer blade hopefully gives this version more of a 'cutting rapier' feel rather than a 'complex-hilted arming sword' vibe. If anyone else would like to compare the original's specs as listed by KoA, they're here: kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2203Also, for those looking for more pictures of the grip, I would imagine they've stuck to the same design pretty well (based on the preliminary pictures posted), so the extra views from KoA should be helpful. I'm loving the fact this version has a confirmed 5160 blade, I can't remember if the original was ever confirmed as such or if it was Hanwei's ubiquitous 1566. Additionally, while I would imagine this version's release will likely lower the resale price of the originals a tad, I bet they'll still command a higher than average price due to the original metal grip's aesthetics. As soon as I manage to get one in, I'll be on here to let y'all know about it!

Hanwei - a trio of themed katana coming out soon-ish. Working on some small pocket Kiridashi now too. Several more swords around the middle of the year (around Blade Show I hope). Kingston Arms - Several in the works - but at least two new swords by Blade show. Blake

I have one of the new ones and I must say it is quickly become one of my favorites if not THE favorite. I've have been wanting this sword for nearly a decade, when I hesitated on buying the previous model until it was discontinued. After all this time I am not disappointed. It handles like a rapier, but actually manages to cut really well. From what I've heard they have improved it so I'm glad I waited and got the new one instead of buying the old model secondhand.
The grip is rock solid, and the leatherwork is almost seamless. They seem to have added an antiqued finish to the guard and pommel that I don't think the old one had. I dig it. It came razor sharp, and because of that and the good edge geometry it cuts better than my arming swords. 10/10 for this price range.

I just got mine in today and it's excellent!
While I haven't handled the original, this one feels like an authoritative cutter without a doubt! Mine is sharp, but not as sharp as my Kingston Arms XIV, so I'll be touching up the edge a bit. My initial impression is that it feels like a single-handed longsword; very agile, just as willing to cut as thrust.
I haven't been over it with a fine toothed comb or handled it much yet, but it's definitely a keeper and worth waiting for!!!
Oh almost forgot, the handle is extremely comfortable! As much as I liked the looks of the original version, this feels so good in the hand I wouldn't change it at all!

Here are a few guard shots of my original Hanwei. Sorry for the sucky screen-cam photos. It's really a very sexy piece. That is a very nice looking guard, thanks for sharing. This really looks more and more appealing the more I study it, starting to seem that between this and the new katana models I'll be back to buying Hanwei this year

This is really cool to hear that you think so positively of this particular sword. With the grip, is the leather seamless as in not stitched?

Yes, the leather covering the grip is not stitched. The leather covering on the ricasso is stitched, of course. I'm really impressed with the way this sword feels. It handles like a smallsword until you make a quick wrist cut, then you realize this blade really wants to cut something.
