Hi! Nearly one year ago, I purchased the Hanwei Bastard Sword with antiqued finish. It didn't take much time to decide that I will give it some modifications. Just a few days later I stripped it down to the core and found a solid tang (same solidness as the Rhinelander, btw). Very nice! My plans for the Bastard are: -remove the antiqued look from the blade -reduce width of the guard in the center area -remove the little grooves on the guard -give the guard two side rings -give the tip a more narrow look -produce a new pommel (the actual one is made from two half-shells, new one might become pear shaped) -giving the blade a new grip with more harmonics Working will begin in the first week of the new year! Stay tuned...

Looking forward to it! Customization projects are so fun. Frustrating too at times but also fun!

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

Good job so far! That's going to look great. Thanks for posting the disassembled photo. I've often wondered about the tang on this sword, and your pic convinced me. This will *probably* be my next purchase. I won't be modifying it though...I like the dark, rugged look of it. It'll be the 'Dark Side' enemy of my Hanwei Rhinelander. Thanks again, and good luck!

I've been thinking of modding mine too (new handle, cord grip wrap, etc.). It's a fun and well-done sword, took out the branches of a dead tree that had to go without any problems, so glad to see the tang is as healthy as I had figured.
Looking forward to seeing how this comes together, I've often wondered what it'd look like without the antiqued finish (although I do like the dark vibe to it)

Thanks! Everything is going according to plan so far. Filing the welds between guard and rings is a little bit pain in the ass, but I have plenty of time because of holidays . I'll follow your wish, Uhlan, but the blade is in my workshop, you need to wait until I return there. Forgot to mention, that I made the tip narrower. Pics will follow! So long...

Alright, here's an intermediate level for you. The pictures are really bad, but enough for a little impression. Better pictures will be presented, when I managed to produce the grip shells. The pommel took barely time to produce, it was the first attempt for my last sword, but it was too light, so i put it on reserve. But it found its utilization right now. The sword already handles great even without a grip. Next week I will continue my work by lathing the grip shells.

Grip template is ready: The starting point at the guard is quite wide, but this is a "must be" because the tang is wide, too. I'm very tempted to choose a different leather color this time (all previous swords got a black leather)

Grip shells fresh from the lathe: That's the preparation by the way. I always use at least three hose clamps spread over the workpieces and secure this end by the revolving tail stock center. Works fine for me!

This keeps looking better and better. Awesome job so far, really digging how it looks with the double-ringed guard

Alright, that's it: It weighs 1645 g now, is 1270 mm long and has its forward pivot point right at the point, it handles like a dream. Looks a little bit like a stretched Rhinelander... This was definitely not my last modification. I'm a little bit curious, how solid the tang of my claymore is

This turned out really cool, very different from the original look, in a really nice way. Looks like a Rhinelander on steroids (with a double ring guard instead of that single ring) that switched to the "light side" of the force. You really pulled off something cool with this one.
Now that you mention it, I'm curious as to how the tang on a Hanwei claymore looks too (and more interested in seeing what you cook up with modifying it).
