I'm new here. I'd like input on buying a new sword. I've been looking at the windlass Ulfberht, the Erbach, and gen2s !12th century or Lucerne swords. What be the best bang for the buck?

Hi Daniel, In the last couple months I have picked up a number of swords, Windlass Ulfberht, Gen 2 Crusades, DSA Medieval Knight, VA Atrim, and a couple others. I must say one of the swords which just impressed the heck out of me for the money was the Windlass Ulfberht. I think I paid $159 plus $18 for sharpening for a toatl of about $180, and it is a beauty. Scabbard is not wood covered with leather, just leather but very nice. I don't think you can beat it for the money, and who knows how much longer they will be available at that price.

I would personally go for the 12th century just because I love the lines and simplicity.

What do you want the sword for?
Do you have a perference in style or handling characteristics of your sword?
It's not the best bang for the buck if it doesn't meet what you want to do with it.
If all the swords you mentioned are sword types you are really interested in, then I would say the ulfberht is the best deal from that list.

Ok, I'm new to swords, but not to weapons. I've been a hardcore living history buff of the 17th and 18 century for 25 years. Build my own guns ,knives and barchery equipment. Now I want to go back farther. I have celtic/Scottish roots with some Norse too. I use my gear, but take good care of it. Lots of stains teare scratches and blood and sweat. I want a good handling sword that is quick. Light in hand as well hanging on my side. I want to learn to cut with it . In order to do demos for church youth groups and men.

Well I think that some of the windlass swords would be what you are looking for. I would still say that the gen 2 12th is a good blade, especially if you got brian to do some custom work but that will push the price up.

The Ulberht is a fantastic sword. Read the review by shootermike /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=2170 that should convince you. You can also get it at a great price through Jason from Arms of Valour. You will not regret it. Attached are some close up pics I took.

I really like what I've read about the Ulberht and I've been wanting a sword very like it. . . but I just hate the "ulbert" inscription on the side. other than that I love the design. I've been so busy catching up my japanes sword knowledge my western blades have been neglected. with the Kokoro Ichi project done it's time to go back I think. so Daniel, please let us know how you like your new sword when it comes and congrats. be safe, have fun.

Speaking of which, the Erbach is the first Windlass to caught my eyes, anyone got their hands on this one by any chance ?

I am customizing an erbach right now, and I find it a bit whippy for my tastes.

Well ok, true. but I can count on a sword made by Gen2, DSA or VA being nice and solid. For windlass, it is more often than not the exception than the rule.
