At least my sword cane won't get me into trouble. Are you sure? Carry of swords (or almost anything for that matter, even some guns without permit) is legal in Poland, but a swordcane is a "concealed" weapon so it is illegal and you might still get problems for it. Did they repeal that in texas too?

A rebooting of dueling culture was part of my original point. Obviously, laws would have to follow suit, but there is legal precedent for it. This is the interesting question. Would a fashion accessory (swords hanging from belts) lead to a trend (hanging from the belts of large groups of people) which would then lead to a dueling culture? And what would this dueling culture look like? Very interesting indeed.

I think we assume bullies wouldn't be skilled or take advantage of this situation lol. Just because we don't like them doesn't mean they wouldn't be good with a sword. Not every hoodlum is a skinny idiot. Bullies exist ad nauseum, within all social strata, and with little regard to social mores. I would just prefer to live in a society where physical altercations are settled with tools that favor my size, skill, and aesthetic sensibilities. That's not to say I'm not also handy with a gun, because I am an experienced shooter, but a height and reach advantage doesn't do me much good with the old shooting irons.

If I actually went around town with sword in belt, aside from being laughed at for being a huge goony nerd, I'd maybe get stopped by a writer for a local rag or dumb blog for some easy content and very likely questioned by police. I would _expect_ local cops to check on the weirdo walking around with a sword. If the weapons ever came out or made someone even slightly nervous, it would be an easy "disturbing the peace" rap if nothing else and not a fun day. Ren faire is one thing, otherwise its unneeded attention in my opinion. The number of people who think that it is a good idea to carry swords in public are massively outnumbered by people who think that is crazy and dangerous, so it would most likely not last very long.

What if the bad guy wins the duel? Where is the justice in that? ....and a bad guy is not going to follow the rules or take a beating like a man. I think if the U.S. went down this road, we would end up with "The Purge" haha...eh. No, really.

Agreed. Under certain situations, a bowie type would be my personal limit, as it's still kinda sorta able to carry and conceal without making the sheeple gawk, laugh, freak out.

The firearm deal really takes care of any potential "Thunder Dome" future regarding people rocking ginormous blades. Worst case is you get a recreation of the revolver/sword scene from Raiders Of The Lost Ark . Gulp.

I would rather stake my life on fencing than any other medium, as its also what I'm better at. I would prefer a street fight situation than a proper duel though. I would lose against someone who knew their semprini well. But good ol pocket sand can elevate my odds in an alley

Hopefully, I wont be motivated to put my head in the sand, freeze with my eyes closed while shaking like a wet puppy, or call for mommy while holding my hands together while on my knees praying.

Yeah, but that's a bit different from just carrying them around in the middle of a culture where it is not a normal part of life.

Yeah, but that's a bit different from just carrying them around in the middle of a culture where it is not a normal part of life. Which brings us to the question, would it be advantageous if our culture had large blade carrying as a normal part of life? Clearly, the environment one lives in would have a greater effect on purpose of carry, as farming, outdoors lifestyles would see greater utility. Anything larger than a kukri, bowie, parang, barong, etc...and other machete type (with 14" or less blades) would lose portability, concealability. In large developed cities, you would only be lugging hanging swords as a fashion accessory, because firearms would be the clear self defense option (not discounting concealed folding knives and fixed blades).

People carry swords all the time in the Southern Philippines though and it isn't all that bad: They also have Rodrigo Duterte. I'd be wearing a weapon at all times were he my President.

A lot of times, weapons are fashion accessories. I'm of the opinion that the guy walking around with his molon labe bumper sticker, black ballcap, mirrored shades and three percenter t-shirt, big spooky black boots, and open carry pistol is selling an image as much as I would be walking around with my fancy full rayskin saya or my outstanding tooled leather longsword scabbard. I don't know that it would be advantageous one way or another. Since people seem to be jonesing to shoot people for carrying swords, any deterrent would be cancelled out by the weird bloodlust it apparently conjurs up.

Ah, yes, CONSPICUOUS carry (Ninja numb skulls, who will even open carry long rifles), as opposed to open carry, which is more appropriate when your in the back woods or rural (less dense) environments where there are more like minded folks who are less sheepish. And lets not forget (of course) concealed carry. I like the idea that one is free do open carry, but hate when people abuse the ability and freak out the populace with AR's slung over their shoulders. Probably much harder (and less wise) to rock a Glock open carry in a super congested blue state city than the red state sticks (Captain Obvious at your service ).

Conspicuous carry is a fantastic term. Thank you for that.
I'm not opposed to the idea of open carry, but there's certainly a point where it starts becoming awkwardly cartoonish.
Unfortunately, openly carrying a sword falls under the latter at this point. Would it be fun to take my sword for a walk? Probably. I know of some really cool places that I'd love to do some photography with them. I just know it would be an exercise in poor judgment to actually strap the thing on and hit the town.
