I've been out three times since the 1st. Two grocery store runs and a visit to Walmart. I have yet to see anyone carrying anything larger than locking folders in belt pouches, but that's the norm here. No Ninja swords or Claymores yet! ...Chris

I would love to wear a bowie or bayonet if it was legal to do so here. The only sword I can see not being too ridiculous to wear around is a sabre maybe. Those are at least recent-ish
Katana have just become funny, unless your Japanese. But even then, Japanese honorifics have even become a bit of a parody on themselves thanks to anime, so can't see why a sword wouldn't be as well
Edit: I still like katana. But it's not the sword I would wear in public

I kinda feel the same, D. ---If you're going to carry around a kat, you might as well go out in full Samurai robes and make a complete fool of yourself...especially if you are a middle-age, pot-bellied black or white guy. I'm of Norse descent, but you won't see me toting a Viking sword while wearing a nasal helm and chainmail. Well....Maybe not. ....Chris

It's only a matter of time though. I think a saber with regular clothes is the most acceptable sword one could wear. A small sword might come off as a bit too fedora and "classy", seeing how those guys love ripping off the Victorian era. A good ol bowie knife will always be relivant though. Maybe a bayonet. I like to think of a saber as too old to be tacticool, and not movie hero enough to be mall ninja. But a swords days are numbered lol

A CS Cutlass Machete with its sheath would be decent! Agreed. A good ol cutlass machete might not look out of place in today's society

A CS Cutlass Machete with its sheath would be decent! Once we see that....THE ARMS RACE BEGINS! Remember that folks use the Cutlass machete to chop blackberry bushes and such, so one would immediately start seeing higher quality (meaning fit and finish, not necessarily function) items which give fashion bling. My NCO (might have to cover up Marine logo, as I'm not a member of the armed forces) saber or smallsword would fit in this world (though I'd probably stick to a bowie or sword cane). If EVERYBODY started rocking the steel, I suppose I'd have to join in...peer pressure, you know .

People dictate what is fashionable. We just need to woo some high-profile tastemakers to the dark side. Also, sword duelling culture needs to make a comeback. Society would be more polite if you had to back your words up with steel.

Society would be more polite if you had to back your words up with steel. Would probably go to "first blood" rather than the earlier "to death" type duel. Level of deadly effect would go from rapier, to small sword, to court/dress sword. We already have MMA fighting, so HIGHLY regulated contests (with at least some level of protection) could be feasible. Full on, Thunder Dome style fights with rapier (boy, would that be a sight to behold ) could never be legally sanctioned. Will have to wait for SHTF apocalypse for gladiator festivities to commence.

The average mouthy milquetoast won't be quite so quick to step up when more than a harshly worded retort is on the line. There are far more internet badasses than there are hard basterds. If society had a mechanism for calling out those who besmirch one's honor with dire repercussions for those too cowardly to back their word with mettle, then there would be far fewer trolls and bullies.

Alas, firearms rear their ugly heads into all the scenarios envisioned (minus internet, of course). Some scrawny fool can always pull a gat from their trousers and pull the trigger with their cowardly finger into a crowd, but gang members usually do each other in. I do think you are generally correct in the basic concept that a well armed society (mainly the "good guys") whether sporting blade or gun, is a polite one, and that only criminals wielding these tools is madness.

You'd be just as likely to empower bullies.
We've got open carry of whatever you want. You can waltz around dripping with handguns while sporting a daisho and a fixed blade knife strapped on to anything you can attach it to if you so chose.
Weirdly enough: 631:2-a Simple Assault. – I. A person is guilty of simple assault if he: (a) Purposely or knowingly causes bodily injury or unprivileged physical contact to another; or (b) Recklessly causes bodily injury to another; or (c) Negligently causes bodily injury to another by means of a deadly weapon. II. Simple assault is a misdemeanor unless committed in a fight entered into by mutual consent, in which case it is a violation. Source. 1979, 126:3, eff. Aug. 4, 1979.
Despite actually being able to punch someone in the face without the threat of prison if you both agree to have a fight (the old "You want to take this outside?" card), this somehow doesn't actually make the average jerk any more polite.
How Ic and II interract could be interesting. Maybe we can restart a dueling society?

A rebooting of dueling culture was part of my original point. Obviously, laws would have to follow suit, but there is legal precedent for it.

I think we assume bullies wouldn't be skilled or take advantage of this situation lol. Just because we don't like them doesn't mean they wouldn't be good with a sword. Not every hoodlum is a skinny idiot.
