ORIGINAL SPECS AND DESCRIPTION (Designers initial notes and description):Gladiator/berserker shortsword. It has influences from greek xiphos and viking era swords.
INITIAL THOUGHTS:Blade should be around 22", handle around 6-7". Triple fuller. Blackened steel fittings. Peened pommel. TECHNICAL QUESTIONS UNANSWERED:What kind of scabbard should it have? Assuming similar to Roman style (wood core, red leather wrap to match the handle, black steel reinforcement. How will it fit the slightly unusual guard? What is the shape of the pommel? Is it round, or flat like a Viking pommel? I am thinking flat.. Red leather wrap on the handle and the guard assembly fits over the top? BACKGROUND STORY EXPANSION:This should be the current Imperial Gladius in production and use. We have established these swords are made from an 'Unobtanium Alloy' and are enchanted (+1). Perhaps this one is a Centurions sword - designated by the extra quillion ring? (perhaps the standard legionnaires sword has only one ring). If so, then perhaps this sword has received extra enchantment via the three fullers and is equivalent of +2 with some other special property (warning against ambush, leadership and/or morale boost, etc). |

I'm not a fan of gladius or a lot of other ancient style swords, but THIS is awesome!
I'd love to see the fullers blackened as well, that would really set this off!
I also think the extreme point and the "pointed-ness" of the "side points", since I'm not familiar with the correct terminology, will be crucial in this swords execution.

 Here is a side view of the sword with rough dimensions. I also drew up a potential scabbard idea. The grip is red leather with a half wire wrap. The pommel and the guard have langet-like extensions that slide over the grip. |

Beautiful design. Well deserved win. Are the rings on the guard functional, as in, designed to slide a finger through for a precise grip? It seems like a dual purposed sword to me. Simple efficiency for troops en masse, but weildable in an alternative and more precise manner for duels among officers. Just my .02.

The pommel and the guard have langet-like extensions that slide over the grip. Hoo that scabbard made the blade 10x more menacing. I wouldn't mind having one of those on my wall. I imagine this thing could cut through the neck of a horse. |

Perfect, and agreed, with the scabbard it looks twice as menacing. I think this one is ready to go to the forge, will let you know if they need any more info or need to make any adjustments.
Just love this one, the only thing I would consider adding to it would be an Imperial Emblem on the scabbard somewhere. Of course, we need to figure out what the Imperial Emblem would look like, but as it can be done at the last minute, it should not hold up the production process any.

The Gladius was primarily used for thrusting in the shield line yes? The finger rings seem like a good addition that give it a bit more precision in the thrust, and yet you still have a Gladius blade so chopping isn't going to be that difficult if you need to. It really makes me think of a Rome that never fell, and kept advancing with no barbarians or dark ages. Renaissance is unnecessary because nothing was lost to begin with. And the sword here is a classic Roman design updated with reletivly modern metalworking techniques and features to keep in line with the times. "Modern" 14th-16th century features: Made of steel, has fullers, finger rings, langet/ricasso, leather/wire wrapped grip. And yet it is easy to see that this sword's great-grandfather was a legionnaire's iron painstick.  |

Very cool, and very stabby - this really kinda reminds me of a short spear like an iklwa or assegai, just with sword furniture. And yeah, the scabbard is a great design and a perfect match for the sword!
The only thing I don't like are those sharp corners inside the rings: they would dig into your flesh quite painfully if you tried to put a finger in there. I think you'd want to make the guard plates just slightly narrower so their inside corners don't extend into the rings like that, and bevel their edges, too.

I like the overall design. I think the blade would benefit from a reinforcing central ridge starting after the termination of the middle fuller and ending at the tip. As it stands, the tip looks very fragile in cross-section.
Edit: I particularly enjoy the multicultural and multigenerational influences of this design.

Just my 2 cents, maybe not a wasp waisted grip, or at least a more rounded part for where the pummel interacts with the heel of your hand? It looks like the pummel might bite your hand a bit.
