No, it's a cut and thrust longsword, can have some fuller or not. Broad long fullers make good cutters and bad thrusters, not stiff enough or much too heavy (you'd like it, haha). I think best (least bad) chance if a bear attacks etc. If need you can use it like a spear or javelin. Most versatile sword.

Btw, look up the Hanwei/Legacy Arms/Gen2 "River Witham Viking Sword". My second sword and "My Precioussss" and a real beast! Very broad, not lightweight but not too heavy, long and thin, stiff enough. But single handed, it's still a viking. 2 Reviews here in the [Old] Reviews section. I forgot to mention it cause it was some time not available.

So a non fuller double edged blade is like a non bo-hi katana blade, and me like non bo-hi. Cool. Thanks. Yes, I have read very positive comments about the River Viking sword.

Ha!, if a sword works perfectly with a fuller, do you improve it adding a few oz. of steel on the blade? ;) I see where your going with this wise guy 😉 But if the sword without a fuller can decapitate due to the weight of the blade x's the force of the swing; would a fullered blade used by the same person have the mass necessary to decapitate?? Hence, IS the fullered blade REALLY "optimal?" This question is for you too Lukas 😁 That would depend. Does the fullered blade have the mass to decapitate? A quick (albeit gruesome) test would show that. There is no reason it wouldn't be possible. Plenty of fullered swords are capable of decapitation ;) If it can't do it: is the trade of (you might gain speed, for example) worth it? The answer to that depends on the sword's purpose. For a executioner's sword, it wouldn't be but for a blade intended for fighting it might very well be (if you can't get the hit in because your sword is so slow to accelerate, it doesn't help you in the least if a potential hit would be devastating). But this really goes in the wrong direction. A fullered blade does by no means have to be incapable of dealing heavy blows, nor does an unfullered blade have to be unwieldy and heavy. What I'm saying is this: I believe there is an optimal balance between all the various aspects for a sword. Too much in one direction throws the whole thing off. A delicate balance is needed and that takes a keen eye and good understanding of what a sword should and should not be able to do. Giving too much priority to one aspect will very often ruin the whole piece. Or, at the least, make it very specialised. Like an executioner's sword. Extremely limited in its applications. This must be kept in mind and one must ask oneself if that is what's desired.

Here are 2 other options I like: It is under $225 and meets all criteria except it is not "tactical black". Actually, blade is over 3 feet long. This is the largest kitchen knife I have ever seen! Haha! It is only $140 and has a long single blade with a hardy wooden handle. Not black nor sheath, but I could treat it like a tool.

If I could have any sword for any scenario, it would be this: The Darksword Oslo Viking two hand sword. For me, it's got the perfect blade (3 foot long, wide, double edged, fuller, sharp point). Guard, and black handle look barbaric. If could get a deal, I would get it now. Then I could go all "Rob Roy" on Yogi!

It's vacation season. We take 2 to 3 road trips every summer. After our recent road trip, I thought about this thread scenario. With all the stuff in the back of the SUV, why not a cheap, inconspicuous (thin and black) defense tool that could also be worn on the back for hikes or stored in a tent, etc. After comment review and research, it seems, it will cost at least $300 to $500 to buy a bare blade that is wide, fullered, tempered, sharpened and with a long, handle shaped tang. If its going to cost that much, I might as well consider existing, low cost swords. This tool needs to be cost effective as it will be treated like a car trunk tool. Therefore, I have found some options to consider. See the options below: I searched for this with a little longer blade and grip. Could not find it in black. This sword is under $225 and meets all criteria except blade is a little narrow and guard is a little wide (for scenario). I like it alot. May get it anyway. This sword is under $250 and meets all criteria except no fuller and guard is wide (for scenario). If it had a fuller, I would get it anyway. This sword is approx. $300 and out of stock. If it was black and had sharper point, it would be perfect for scenario. If I could find it, I would get it anyway. What sword would you choose for a strap on back or store in auto trunk sword? It's NOT the most fancy thing, but you wanna borrow my "still" brand new Cold Steel Katana machete? Not the two handed one, the black "katana-looking" one? I can mail it right out tomorrow morning if you want??

No worries, you interested? If so where do you live? It's 1 3/4" thick so it's pretty tank-like!

No worries man, we're all part of the Bladed Brethren here......we gotta look out for each other right?! I concur, I bring my Glock 20 (10mm) when I camp too! BUUUUUT it's cool to be able to bring swords camping, especially if you live in the city like I do and swinging a sword around will get the fuzz called on you 👀 LOL If you change your mind about the C.S katana/machete let me know okay? Oh, I LOVE that two-handed Viking sword you found on K.O.A. Great sword!!

Yes. I agree. Yeah, I take a Glock 23. I even leave it in it's black "tupaware" box. For a while, if you crossed the Hoover Dam, they stopped you and inspected your vehicle. I sweated it out but they looked at the black plastic box and thought nothing of it. Lucked out I guess.

We're still on the topic about a tactical sword for bears or superhuman serial killers right?
I would take something like the Albion Dane but maybe even a bit longer for that. The thrust would always be the safest route to take. Now if you wanted a different take on it, A&A had that custom Zweihander that was quite amazing to behold. Cheaper version would be the Del Tin Venetian.

I have the recently discontinued CS sword breaker. It sort of cheats its way into Djinnobi's (traps) sword realm (as it is well balanced for what it is), though it would really be used as a short spear. It has four hollow ground sides that taper to a pointed tip, and I could never imagine the thing breaking. Yeah I've seen the video of Thompson throwing the swordbreaker into a bull skull (or whatever poor animals skull that is). I think he's got a "throwing fetish" cause that's not the only sword he tries to throw like a bloody javelin LOL Not saying it isn't talented, but who in their right mind would "throw" their primary weapon??, Throwing weapons is truly insane unless your a trained knife thrower and have a cluster of throwing knives at your side. Never throw something at them unless you don't mind it used against you...so I'd throw marshmallows and comfy pillows. Also, a great way to leave yourself defenseless if that is your only weapon. Lynn throws everything. The CS Swordbreaker (it breaks sword LINES, not swords...though it does mess them up) is an improved baseball bat (or a balanced bar mace with a stabbing tip), in that you can also stab with the thing. Using it one handed would be pretty effective IF you had something in the other hand.

My money is on the bear (Alaskan Brown or Polar), as they are amazingly powerful creatures.

I'm waiting for the CS 2017 Chinese Warsword Machete to be available here. Buy three, throw two! (How much superhuman? 20 ft. tall Arnie?)
