I'm looking for someone who knows how to or knows someone who can properly silver plate a habaki & 2 seppa for me. This will be for a custom sword that I'm seriously considering buying, but the habaki & seppa are kind of a dark copper color (made of copper) and the rest of the koshirae are in black & silver, so it just doesn't quite fit.
If anyone has any info about this I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm just trying to avoid having a new silver habaki and seppa custom made, since that will end up costing close to $600 for real silver pieces...plus, the new habaki will probably not fit the saya properly, so I'll have to have a new saya made for it as well (if I want it to fit the way it should, without shims or unevenly filing the koiguchi), and that will be another $400. Add shipping and insurance and I'm looking at $1200 most likely.

I want a pair of double silver habaki made. I can provide as material 10-20 ounces of .999 pure silver if a smith wants to make out good.

I wonder how much silver it would take to make a habaki. That 10-20 ounces you've got may be enough to make your pair plus my habaki & seppa

Foiling either requires skill, or going to an expensive expert.

What a waste of a nice silver coin.
Electroplating is an easy way to go, but it's not going to last all that long.

Not fully convinced Chinese rate the effort just to make the fittings match, but given that others here do, I've told a professional jewelry-maker friend of mine about this discussion. Perhaps she'll look in here in search of a new market. Anyone who can do custom jewelry can carve and cast up custom fittings from scratch as well as foil existing ones.

treeslicer - definitely ask your friend about it, because I imagine there are some people who would need her services. Potentially me for one Verity - yeah, its definitely a nice custom...$5k Rick Barrett blade that Matthew Jenson has for sale I haven't decided to change the habaki and seppa yet for sure, but I just think that with the rest of the sword being black and silver, it would look much better if they were also silver. I'm probably just going to have a new habaki and seppa custom made for it. What's another $600 when your already spending $5k lol. My only concern is having to send the ship the blade back and forth again to have it done...and of course, finding someone who can do it in a somewhat timely manner. As far as electroplating goes, it seems that it ends up very glossy in finish, which is definitely not what I would want anyway. I would want it to be more satin or maybe some kind of scratch pattern, which I don't think would work with such a thin coating with electroplating.

Hope she shows up. People who will spend thousands on modern blades will have the taste and money to spend well on custom fittings. I'd expect that the broadsword swingers would spring for some spectacularly jeweled hilts and guards, too. To add texture to an electroplated surface, you texture before you electroplate, just like the Chinese do on their lovely cast alloy masterpieces.

Ok, if we are talking the likes of Barrett or Clark, then I would recommend Brian Tschernega. He's the MAN.

treeslicer - I'm sure there are people who would love some crazy jeweled custom pieces, I'm not one of them however, but still, I'm sure there are some who could use her services.
Verity - How can I contact him? If you have any contact info, could you please PM it to me? I was also going to ask Josiah Boomershien as well, since he apprenticed for Rick Barrett and has worked with his blades more than anyone else I imagine. Plus, he makes some very nice habaki and seppa from what I've seen and Matthew Jenson told me.

Wally Hostetter is also an excellent choice for any re-fit projects.
