Verity you are truly a Renaissance man.
Excellent write up, very well written.
Knowing nothing about Zelda and the sword, I googled some reproductions and nothing comes close to this FableBlade. I feel that in a real life cross over from fantasy to reality, the sword would look like this to be functional. Great design and execution.
The finish work is almost too amazing, the etched writing so sharp one would think it had to be elvish built. I impressed by the workmanship of this smith. An excellent example of what is possible with an imagination.
Great review sir. Keep them coming!

According to counts, it looks like the Masamitsu will be up next. I totally agree on Brendan's etching. He's really good. He explained to me his method and I hope to incorporate his technique in my own works.

Couldn't have said it better than Verm. I am utterly stunned at the pieces Brendan puts out. Worth more than what he charges in my opinion, but I couldn't ever dream of having the money to buy these at even half the price. You are a fortunate man and are fantastic at reviews. I hope to see more in the future.

I welcome any input on what you all would like to see in terms of style, approach or any details I may have left out to incorporate into further reviews. I'll try and work my way through a bunch over the coming weeks. Part of why I created the poll thread is to help drive and prioritize the order in which I should work my way through.

It's dangerous to go alone...
Ahem. Seriously. Wow. The incredibly rare Fable Blades review!! For the pictures alone, this review would be worth it. It just makes my camera work look even more shoddy. I've wanted to see this blade closer-up for quite some time... and this delivered, in spades. Otherwise, it is a very quality writeup! I certainly gained a far greater appreciation of the guard... and wasn't aware brotherbanzai did the bronzework. The handling notes are awfully appreciated as well. (Which, by the way, I love that Brendan stats out the blades on his site. We don't see that much detail with a lot of custom smiths.) It's really nice to hear practical handling though on something like this! I would still be a -little- nervous swinging one of these, but if it is built that well indeed... (I still remember my heart stopping for a moment when I split off a piece of my stand with my ATrim.) The scabbard closeups are marvelous as well. That looks like something that was pulled right out of someone's imagination, and made real. I guess that is sort of the promise of Fable Blades... I will need to try and save my pennies at some point. Thanks for the awesome review, Verity!

That is one handsome sword. Not my style but would be proud to own one anyway. A very nice write-up.

in the third picture the end of the fuller and the ridge look a bit off center, is that just the picture or are they really uneven ?

in the third picture the end of the fuller and the ridge look a bit off center, is that just the picture or are they really uneven ? I haven't noticed the fuller off center. I think that is a bit of distortion from the photograph. I don't have a macro lense (yet) so the focal length was longer than I wanted on my lense. The sword has two areas of asymmetry that I observed. 1.) the point itself is off center from the center line by about 2-2.5mm and 2.) the "points" of the flare: one side is a tiny bit lower than the other (maybe also 2mm). I've not noticed an offcenter ridge or fuller, but keep in mind, Brendan hand grinds these blades. So tiny imperfections are going to always be present in a hand crafted item. Any of the imperfections are so small you have to be pretty OCD to notice with the blade in-hand.

Wow that is an awesome piece. The attention to detail on the scabbard is unbelievably stunning and it looks like an amazing blade (the runes look seriously b.a.). Now I have to distract myself from allowing the Zelda fan in me from overriding my financial stability...
Thanks for sharing. That is without a doubt one of the coolest customs I've ever seen.

Hi VerityThanks for the great write-up and amazing photography. I might have to borrow a few of those shots. It's interesting how the patina has changed on the pommel. Handling may have contributed a bit to that. Jeffrey can probably point you in the right direction to get some more antiquing solution, which can darken the pommel considerably more so the tang is not so obvious - though it will hide the writing some. You can see how much darker it used to be and how much more the script stood out on the old photo: :-)
