I would assert a couple of points based on my own observations here and my knowledge of how social media works. (I happen to work in media and while not for Facebook, we interact with them from a content perspective and I happen to work specifically in the user behavioral data space).
1.) this forum is better for persistency. Content is easily searchable and persistent vs getting lost amidst oceanic and temporal feeds.
2.) reach on social media is broader in general so for the folks like makers trying to reach a broader audience the mainstream social media like instagram, Pinterest and Facebook are going to win. Every time. People share, tag and comment because it is easier to do. You get organic growth and reach.
3.) mainstream social media has SO much diverse content that attention spans ARE getting shorter. Newer generations of people are also exhibiting less patience to consume. Long form content (documentaries and such) are giving way to short form content such as clips and sound bites.
That said, I suppose SBG could do things to help. There are ways to better bridge the forum and their Facebook group. There is technology that can auto post forum articles to FB and auto create threads based on FB posts. That could have the benefit of helping to gain the reach of FB for those users there, while still giving the folks who use the forum (and may not even be on FB) the ability to consume that content and not miss out on it.

You'd have to get the owners of SBG involved. 1.) forum tech like XenForo have very progressive social media (and Facebook integration) 2.) plugins exist for many forum technologies. (Example is SMF has a SA Facebook mod that lets you seamlessly autopost content to a Facebook page; I am unsure as to whether it works for groups). The way to solve this is not keep them separate silos, but rather more seamless integration and blur the line. People using the forum won't notice other than increased activity. And all of a sudden the content is out on Facebook and leveraging the reach there. Content posted on Facebook also makes its way back here for persistency.

I just need some time. I will get this ship floating again. Once I have a concrete plan, I will make a thread about it, to attract members to the campaign and to get suggestions. Then I will get the mods to put me in contact with the owners, so I can either ask them to lead this forum to it's new era or at least let me form a group that they give authority to do so. Quite frankly, I have no idea how much (if any) money goes into keeping the forum up, apart from what we spend on and post about here. But I expect the owners to at least let someone help.

I don't know the SBG financials either, but I know that their primary source of revenue is donations, and probably some contribution through the SBG store's revenue... most likely perhaps some affiliation revenue with some vendors. I agree. I think that some things could be done. But I am sure the owners are also noodling on this challenge

Expect some crazy (and probably stupid and boring) threads to pop up soon. Lack of significant attention has never stopped me, and it definitely won't now.

Or partake/make some interesting threads to get people wanting to post more. The apocalypse and home invasion threads do pretty well I think. Nothing like the threat of disaster to get a martial artist wondering how to apply themswlves

I have a back log of received knives and stuff I could review and maybe stir up some interest? I've been intending to review a bunch of them for at least two groups on facebook, would be happy to post them here as well if it would help?

i see most of the reviews here, but if i dont have much interest in the particular piece i just dont comment See that is my other issue. My tastes run to what I would call the exotic and the traditional and I am not sure how many people will be interested in reading reviews about blades that are not mainstream and for the most part not European. I mean I just received a really beautiful rosewood and bone handled fighting khukuri that I am going to review for another facebook group owned by the guy who employs the smiths that made my blade but how many people are interested in that kind of thing? I have two traditional kuku macans that will be coming to me soon as well but how many people are interested in or even know what a kuku macan is? Let alone would be interested in reading a review about it? I guess for me it comes down to how much effort I have to spend to do something and how much interest there is in that effort.

I wonder if it would be beneficial to only post the reviews here on the forum and post teasers and links to the forum on FB. i see most of the reviews here, but if i dont have much interest in the particular piece i just dont comment See that is my other issue. I'm not a huge fan of the dominant swords types in this forum either. I can appreciate the beauty and the craftsmanship that goes into a Katana or straight, double edge Euro swords. But, curved single edged swords with more simple grips are what I am drawn to. I would be mostly into the tactical sword sub forum if it had a pulse. The only time I read reviews of Euro swords or Katana style swords is if I'm interested in the maker of the sword. That's the great thing about swords, there is a style for everyone's taste. There seems to be friendly and helpful people in this forum and very few trolls. I really appreciate that. It's what keeps me coming back here.

...But, curved single edged swords with more simple grips are what I am drawn to... Funny, that's exactly what I'm making a pair of at the moment; 30", modestly curved, single edged sickle swords. The grips will be Bolivian rosewood scales with an integral guard, quite simple. These are to be the first swords I've made. I'll be grinding the bevels in today in fact... I've been a member here since November of 2011. I've seen slow periods and active periods cycle on and off during that time. While this is one of the slower periods I've seen (thanks to FB I'm sure), I think SBG will live on. The friendly atmosphere and lack of trolls here is what makes this place so much better than the FB groups. Hopefully that, combined with the wealth of easily accessible info here, will ensure the forum's survival.
