We use to have a lot of blade makers on here posting. Now we have very few. Where is San Mac and the others. Know a few have gone to facebook but facebook sucks if you are not on there all the time you miss out on a lot of things. I have even been on facebook a lot more than I use too. But really don't like it they play favors too muck on there. Also some can block you they can say whatever they want to about you, you will ever see the post. You will not to be able to defend yourself, that's a cowards way of doing things.

At least we still have awesome people like you and @digsfossilsandknives around.
I personally use you-know-what only for my college notifications and new MA information.

I suppose I could post my recent works here more often. I rarely visit here, anymore. This place has basically become a graveyard. Efforts to bring back activity had proven ineffective, so I'll check my messages from time to time. But that's about it.

It's a graveyard because we let it happen for facebook. This place is better to get info from. At least it is easy to fine. Miss one day on facebook it's almost impossible to find anything.

I agree with Driggers it's bit slow phase at the forum. Even though I didn't comment too often to makers threads I still greatly enjoyed reading them. I would much rather follow forum members projects in here as I don't use Facebook. Guess I'm too old school in that way. I guess Facebook booming is getting all the new members as we hardly get the usual "newbie" questions.

I refuse to use facebook, just seems like a time waster to me. Here is what I suspect (but don't know) has occurred: A lot of the old guard slowly moved on to other things, with life in general I think, rather then specifically to a different online sword format of some other type. Forums, kind of being an older technology these days, those old people weren't replaced by a new set of similarly engaged new people. Many of the new people are also involved in other sorts of social media, which leaves them less time for this place. Those of us that are still here from the older times, seeing less going on here and fewer people to get involved in interesting topics with, are then less inclined to spend as much time here, and so the cycle becomes self perpetuating. It also seems like there are a lot more people who read posts but then don't actually comment, furthering the ghost town image.
I used to try to get over here every day or so to see what this or that member was up to or had to say or show today. There is less of that going on now, and since I have less free time, I make less effort to get over here. It's now sometimes weeks between times I log on, but often I still see the same topics as "most recent" from the last time I was here.
Technology marches on. Kind of a bummer for those of us not interested in the newest trends, but that's how things have always been.

Marc is busy with his day job. I talk to him semi regularly though. He is doing pretty well. :)

Some of us are trying to keep the fire burning at least, Jeffrey. But yeah... it comes and goes I imagine as people get busy... I also see a new crop creating engagement though... so hopefully there will always be folks helping to fan the flames

Not a maker here, just an enthusiast. That said, I found with myself, that as I have ended up with about (well, have a Huawei ordered...but updates are sparse so nothing to report...gave Huawei my specs 2-3 weeks ago, and no response to them...maybe will build it, time will tell. Huawei is not a real chatty type, but the swords are worth hanging in for). Anyway, I find that as I reach sword saturation point, I have less to say that I have not already said. Similar to an airgun chat site....I have my collection and have chatted a lot over the years there about them and using them. But have not bought anything new. Have not done anything different from the past with them. So have not been active there anymore. Happens when one has more "toys" than time to play with them. Wish I had more time, but life is what it is. RinC

The ones who've turned maker are more active in knife/swordmaking forums and facebook I think. As for some losing the passion and moving on, that's true of any hobby I suppose although I've seen plenty who just interact on facebook since it is a much faster means of communication with fellow enthusiasts.

Facebook is faster but things get lost so fast. Here you can find things a lot easier.

I agree with L Driggers here. As with Robert in California, I'm not a maker just an enthusiast. I've tried going to facebook with links to sword makers pages and its just a mess. I can't find any sort of discernable system to find anything in particular. Its just (seemingly) random posts about this or that project that has already been sold or that they may be working on. I actually loathe facebook if I'm being honest lol...if it weren't for keeping in touch with a select few old friends and family members, I'd never use it. At least this forum is organized into sub-categories and links to click on for specific things. I don't know, maybe I'm old school as well, but I'm only 40 so I'm kind of in between old and new. I love my new technology as far as electronics, home theatre, music equipment, video games, etc., but it seems the ancient art of sword making just doesn't translate very well to new trends in technology...probably for the better IMHO

Well, I just posted most of my projects from the last year. I'll try to post here more often.

I'm also only an enthusiast. I doubt I'll ever turn maker - maybe customizer sometime in the future, though. Also, I don't use Facebook for my own reasons, but I think L.Driggers has the right of it. It's way too easy for things to get lost in a timeline, where here - I can be away a couple days, look back, and see all of those lovely and bright 'NEW' tags. Or even, I can see the Participated bubble lit up for something I've commented on and cared about, rather than something random. It's also incredibly nice to have categories as we do, as mentioned before.
I appreciate that this place exists - and that I've gotten a lot of helpful advice and found things that I would not have found otherwise. Also, I imagine my posts or questions would just get lost in the deluge of Facebook comments.

Like others have said, social media has made it easier for people to post their "stuff" than on the older forums. I really enjoy SBG, but as also stated by someone above, there's only so much time that can be devoted in a day for posting information, and most of the time social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) wins out. But, Fallen does make a very good point - information is soooo much easier to find on the forum than Facebook, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Agree with what many have said, facebook is fine but if you get behind you cant find anything. Love SBG as a resource.

I agree, things get lost on FB very quickly. As a newer maker, I do use it, as I try to have as many platforms to share my work as possible. That said, if it wasn't for this forum, I wouldn't be making blades. My loyalty will always lie here, "graveyard" or not. I've made some good friends here as well; some even within an hour drive from home.

Never been a maker but probably can consider myself one of the "old guard" (not banging my own drum.) I just get to the point with groups where I feel my input is no longer valued and so I visit less and less until I don't really come around at all. Not sure if removing myself from groups is any great loss to the group but that is my reasoning behind it. I still check here from time to time to see what smiths I have always respected or have bought from have been making but I rarely interact or say anything as I was getting the feeling for a while there that I was "killing" threads as they'd have great discussion and then I'd offer my input or knowledge and they'd go dead. A few people were also "kind" enough to point out some things about the way I post and that made me even less inclined to interact.
These days with all the stuff I am dealing with in my personal life and people I once respected pointing out certain "truths" to me about the way I interact I pretty much keep my opinions and my knowledge (what is left of it) to myself.

This saddens me Bloodwraith. You've been a part of this forum a long time. Some folks are always going to be sensitive to a perceived tone or words used in a post. You can't make everyone happy, but that isn't a reason to mute yourself and rob the world of your valuable contributions. I know there are some prickly folk, but that doesn't make their contributions or yours any less valuable IMO. Unless a mod is slapping you on the wrist, don't fret over what people think. I for one would value your input on many threads. Makes me sad some of our old guard feel like they have little to contribute, when more often than not, they've the most.

i like the forum better because as Driggers said, its easier to find information, but i still do use facebook but less for the knowledge and more for just buying stuff cause its easier there, maybe thats why so many makers are gravitating to facebook
