This maybe isn't my favorite song(though it is very near the top and sometimes takes the #1 spot) this is probably the performance that has struck me the most. I saw it as a fairly young kid. My dad had it recorded on a VHS tape along with Dire Straights performance of Brothers in Arms at the '88(I think) Mandela show. I'd heard SRV my whole life, but this was the first time I can recall actually reacting strongly to a song, and I can't think of a time when I've reacted as strongly to one since. It's a good song on the album, and he was always phenomenal live, but this in particular is the version that struck the cord.

ZZ Top: La Grange I heard it for the first time on a school trip to Paris, later we formed a little group of friends which lasts more or less until now. A few years ago I even found the lyrics .

Great interaction on this one, and I too love all kinds of music. How about great opera/metal from Finland or somewhere? Plenty of swords to boot:
Still, everyone has a favorite everything.

How can you guys even pick a song? Its like. I got a favourite album for every genre, and even then, I still find myself stuck on a few.
What should I post? Something I think you guys will like? A song thats been with me for ages? Choices are tough with this one. I normally like listening to playlists, stuff like coffee house style jazz, or even chill Lo-Fi hip hop. It gives my room a classy atmosphere, even if my room looks like a storage unit. But I will show you guys some individual songs that always get me in the right mood for thinking about life.
Here is Forgotten (Reprise) by The Gathering. This is my favourite song to just melt into my bed to. Makes me think of ruined kingdoms and forbidden forests, which feels fitting for a forum that is into Tolkien style fantasy.
Here is one for the metal head vikings: Not Unlike the Waves - Agalloch

And who can forget Arriving Somewhere, but Not Here by Porcupine Tree. This song will always be a favourite. Would drive all night with my best friend, they would just drive as I drank mixed drinks and smoked. We would talk all night, staying up till 7AM and getting breakfast together before heading off to our own houses to sleep. I have some of my best memories to this song

I love music of all types, but one song gets to me every time. "Goodbye, Norma Jean" by E.J. I've had a thing for Marilyn ever since I was a young boy. My fave country song is "The Dance"...lots of personal meaning there for me that I'd rather not get into. Don't want no tears in my beers. And ANYTHING by Ozzy and ZZ Top. Oh hell yeah....take me back to the 80's!!! .....Chris

Pretty much anything by Roy Orbison but if I had to pick, either "Crying" in which he poured out his sadness, or "You Got It" in which he celebrated finally being happy.

I have waaayyy too many favorite songs to list here...but one that comes to mind off the top of my head is this version of Red Hot Chili Peppers "Don't Forget Me" Live at Slane Castle in Ireland in front of 80,000 people. One of the best live performance DVDs I've ever seen. John Frusciante's guitar work went to another level with a mix of finger tapping and hypnotizing delay effects, Chad Smith's rhythmic, hypnotic drum work, Flea's fairly sedate bass chords keeping the backbone of the song going, and of course, Anthony Keidis' phenomenal lyrics and perfect delivery with just the right mix of subtlety and force. F'n Awesome. Enjoy
P.S. Please listen all the way through to the guitar solo at the end...still gives me chills to this day.

Tool "Sober" and Alice in Chains "Down in a hole" - because I went through a bad addiction about 10 yrs ago and these songs were extremely cathartic for me...along with a TON of other songs and music in general really, so its very hard to pick just one song for me.

Sober and Prison Sex got me hooked on Tool right after Undertow came out. Two of the greatest songs ever made.

Prison Sex may actually be my favorite Tool song lol Sober just has a special place in my heart for the lyrics and how I related to it during a dark period of my life. Stinkfist, eulogy, 46 & 2, the grudge, ticks & leeches, reflection, jambi, right in two...the list goes on and on. And of course Bottom w/ Henry Rollins

Don't forget Lateralus, Wings for Marie, Schism, Vicarious, and good ol Mantra. When on a mind altering substance, those songs just blow your brains out.
Tool is amazing

"Woll ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?" ("would you like to see the bed on fire?") by RAMMSTEIN; this struck me some 20 years ago during a very bad time period, suffering serious heartbreak from my first long-time relationship... the raw energy of the guitars, combined with the machine-like beat, the very sexual hidden-meaning lyrics and the bridge-line "Sex ist eine Schlacht, Liebe ist Krieg!" ("sex is a battle, love is war!") fitted like a glove back then... ah, those old times... ;-)
That darn song still grabs me by my spine, shakes me up und gives me a total urge to move my feet and all the rest, along with some serious headbanging... the only other song who still can achieve this is the80ies "Princess of the dawn" from german metalheads ACCEPT - hard to decide between these two!

My first-love-heartbreak song is "Water of Love" from Dire Straits. "Amazing Graze" from the Dropkick Murphies helps then.
