First of all I am new here. If my etiquette is wrong please feel free to pick me up on it. Anyway, RyanSword. I've seen they don't have too much of a good reputation on here but it seemed to be about the functionality of the swords rather than the look, I've been looking at their replica of Wado Ichimonji. (A sword from the anime "One Piece") I'm not too interested in slicing things up, but I'm just wondering it's be just fine for looks and maybe the odd bit of showing off when friends come over. Here is the link, just in case: www.ryansword.com/wado-ichimonji-roronoa-zoro-katana-one-piece-sword-1095-high-carbon-steel-sharp-p-789.html

Hello SwordNoob, the german store "swords-and-more.com" has one from 1050 steel, unknown maker. It's absolutely no problem in this forum to speak about RyanSwo

Thanks for the information. These are much cheaper, does that necessarily mean lower quality?

I have absolutely no experience with those anime swords. I bought a few production swords from windlass or hanwei in this store and find them ok. I know they have many anime etc. things. In the german language sites are a few buyers posts. The cheaper one might be display sword only, the 159 € seems to be a real sword, the buyers seem to be contented. Forum member Holg has got lemons from sword and more and is happy with his ryanswords, so there is no clear advice.

There's nothing wrong with going cheep if it's just going to be displayed and you're not too fickle on the flaws that come with cheaper models. Problem is when you want to take it off the wall and swing it or cut with it. For the most part even when these cheaper Anime styled katana say carbon steel, that doesn't mean they're actually heat treated or durable enough for use. There's plenty of "high carbon steel" swords on Budk for example that couldn't handle a pool noodle let a lone a few forceful swings, due to either a lack of heat treatment or weak hilt construction. Again it just depends on what you want out of the sword. If you are just going to scratch that fan itch and keep it on the wall go for the cheaper display version. If you are going to want to swing it around to show it to friends (they will swing it around trust me, lol) I'd go for one that has a guarantee of being functional by a reputable vendor. Honestly if I were you I'd look into the LARP latex versions of those Anime Swords. They're not steel but at least you can swing em around and they're pretty accurate to their screen counterparts and under $100. Here's a few LARP versions of the sword you're interested in, for under $30 they ain't to bad and work for a replica or cosplay if you're into that. m.swordnarmory.com/item/36323237m.swordnarmory.com/item/36363339This one's actually pretty cool it has an nylon ito wrap and saya.

Too bad you don't live in the Philippines. We have a local dealer who sells anime katana and the Zorro swords are on closeout.
For these things I wouldn't really condemn Ryansword (though I wouldn't want them to get my money). How about Hanbon, have you tried emailing them?

It's because they are economical and have a variety of designs (okay most are hijacked but still).
It's always common for entry level folk to gravitate towards cheap at first. And when you add a lot of variety, Ryan DOES stand out. Now if only they started making a decent product... and stopped with the shady business practices....

And the way they market. They use the most common search terms for their swords (even if the sword is not that steel type for instance, or that kind of lamination, etc).

I would say it is definitely worth getting in touch with Hanbon (Hanbonforge.com). I am happy with what I have received from them.

I own a wado ichimonji from Ryansword. Zero complaints. The base model is 1095 but they offer spring-steel for the same price.
