Btw the biggest issue with sword nuts down under, apart from VIC (where swords are banned), is the postal system, not the law can't post anything longer than 105cm (42in?). So production nagamaki, nodachi, maio dao, great sword and the like are out of question unless you wanna pay for DHL/UPS.....

Dealing with the various postal services. -_- I've had mostly very good experiences, but some bad ones with most carriers.

Auspost is not bad, I have never lost a package (over 50 last year, I am too lazy to go to the shops, so I buy on line often, even socks and screws). Just the max length is short compare to say USA. Sometimes I have to ask the seller to take the tsuka off (thank goodness I like katana) to keep things under 105cm. Oh, shinai is a pain to buy..... way too long

Considering I'm a longsword fan, that would be no-go for me with the limit in most cases there.

I think this was transferred to Aus Post? There was no issue with it and definitely longer than 105. Also just ordered some Euro swords from Ronin coming via USPS. Hope there is no issue .

Good choice there - the Ronin Euro #7 in particular is an amazing sword. It doesn't 'seem' like it has a particularly sharp edge on it. However, when I finally cut with it, I was proven wrong.

Thanks for that, I have heard a few good reports about it and look forward to testing it out. Also ordered their version of a messer (#10 I think) which looks like it could be an interesting sword. Cant find any reviews on that one but thought I would take a punt on it to see what it's like.

I have also received longer than 105cm (was just 2cm off tho) in the past, it is a bit of luck of the draw, but they could bounce it if over 105. Even if you look up at USPS web page it will say max 105cm for Aus. I really would like a Maio Dao, and the thing is like 150cm, think I will push my luck a bit too far

It could use a better fittings, but the blade looks somewhat legit. Can't say I'm a fan of the just-leather sheath though. You'll have to review it when you do acquire it. I was extremely pleasantly surprised with my #7 - it weighed in a bit heavier, with the balance further out than the old Euro #7 specs, but that hasn't seemed to hurt it much. I've not tried to hit heavier targets with it, but I figured it would bat water bottles around if I wasn't careful... it turned out to slice them almost as nicely as much sharper blades.

Welcome Steve, you can get any size sword you want, you will just have to pay more. Stackry is good from USA to Aus but still can be $200 plus for a 55" package.

Yesterday a custom Nodachi I have been patiently waiting for was shipped to me from China via EMS. This will definitely exceed the Aus Post limit. I think EMS is usually transferred to AuP as well. Hopefully it will arrive without issues.

You're lucky you are not down in Vic with me, Swords are restricted here and you need to either have a permit or an exemption. Getting swords isn't the issue but sending swords from Australia is an issue as AusPost only accepts 105cm and below. The last few I have sent and gone through Pack&Send, good service but expensive.

Yes, I guess I could be a little more grateful to live in a state that has no regulation on swords . Until it was brought up on this thread, I had no idea about the size restriction. I have also received a number of bows from Abbey Archery which come via Aus Post and I just measured the box of the last one (Hoyt Double XL) purchased this year and the box length is 110 cm. I know some of the guys there and I must ask them how they get around the rule on a regular basis. I am intrigued . . . Sorry to hear about the oppressive Vic government. Has to be the most liberal, progressive state in Australia. would not be a good fit for me .

welcome Steven.
As others have mentioned the B709X forms made everything easier - and I understand QLD have an ongoing one for all residents too so you can import daggers and throwing axes/knives with it. Might need to send the registry an email to get a copy of it though?
Also a few of us get together to order our shite to save on postage when possible to the land of Oz, so feel free to post a request or pm me, there are a surprisingly high number of aussies on here bloke (although most are slack like me and hardly post much).
Cheers!

yeah I've used shipito (DHL usually) since I moved back to Oz from the US. Also as i used to sell I can get some ok prices from a few places still which I'm happy to pass on so the freight is lower for my stuff. I can also send swords straight to you with shipito if you have a bunch of gear. The $1000 tax free limit on import is often what stops tooo much consolidatation though.

Please let me know re the nodachi. I have always wondered how far you can push before auspost actually bounce packages. I guess once it gets off the plane, it is more effort to return it to country of origin. One sword costed me $180 on dhl because i really wanted it.

As far as I can tell once it's in the postal system they don't check it again. A few years back Australia post delivered the windlass sword of pavia that I'd bought on deal of the day. It's 62 inches long.
