A long time ago I fell in love with swords and being young and broker, got what I could. After getting out of College and working a while, I got some pieces I liked. Then I sort of stopped. As of late I am getting more interested again. Here are my swords. (swords that have been sold have been removed) 7. Conan Atlantean Sword: from Marto, this thing is wonderful but weighs like 35 pounds. More in part 2.

Looking forward to part two! I am noticing the acute absence of a Nihonto in here.

8. Moro Sword: This is from CAS Iberia years ago and I love the flamberge blade. Of of my favorites. 9. Hand and a Half Sword: Another CAS Iberia sword, love this one. 10. Nihonto Katana: Kanemasa Katana with Wally Hostetter fittings. Newest addition and of course my favorite.

That's why I love this board, so many people with detailed knowledge. It was called that in their paper catalog (remember those!) but yeah you seem to be correct.

I got sword cases in and finally got them mounted up. MAJOR thanks to our SBG resident, and my friend, Verity. I stole his set up, and he gave me advice on how to mount them. Thanks! The top case is housing my Kanemasa nihonto katana. I really like how the cases came out. Nice presentation. Don't worry about the empty bottom case, I have that covered

These cases are bangup-awesome. Several more of them are going to find space on my walls soon enough - though I've only got one up and occupied right at the moment.
(Also, I think this is the first time I've seen the nihonto in the new fittings. Beautiful.)

And the Wife loves it, which is about priceless if you want to keep collecting swords

Nice collection The right wall looks empty, planning on putting sth there? (maybe not another display case, would kinda fill the corner too much, but some axes, why not^^)

So a while back I was hard core nihonto hunting. I had an excel sheet listing swords, their measurements, prices, etc. I must have looked at over 100 swords in depth. My list was down to 10. Finally I decided on a great item at Aoi Art that I just kept coming back to: An Ishido School katana whose blade work just seemed like the sword was engulfed in flames. I will cover some of the details in a bit, but on with the story. I emailed Aoi about the sword and made an offer. The time difference makes getting answers a bit delayed. My email was 4 hours later than another buyer who made a purchase offer that was accepted! 4 hours! Now I had 9 other finalists on my list, but you know how it is when you get set on one sword. What took me some time before I contacted Aoi was my research into the Ishido School (fascinating) and trying to verify this sword to my own acceptance. I was a bit down (ask SBG member Verity) so I did not jump into another buy right away. A week or so later, my friend Verity messages me "That sword is up for sale again". I was surprised but checked the listing and it was no longer the dreaded HOLD but just an open listing. Well I pounced right away and stayed up later into the night to get a response. That night I was able to negotiate an acceptable deal and we agreed. As part of my end, I wire transferred the funds the next day as I gathered non-payment was what killed the previous deal. We also worked out that shipping would be delayed as I was to be away fishing right when the sword was to be shipped and I did not want to miss it. This worked out great as I also bought an Edo period tsuba from Aoi that they could add to same package for shipping (could not help it!). So the sword. The Not So Great: This sword is 100% Ishido School, almost certainly Kishu Ishido school. So what's wrong? The siganture on the tang. It reads "Yoshimichi". If you study the Yoshimichi sword kantei, um this is as much a Yoshimichi as I am a male super model. So the signature is gimei. This is not ideal clearly, but I prefer a gimei to be wildly off based on a sword than be matching to a blade so close it will drive you crazy. Aoi (and they see a LOT of swords) states in description: " I think this sword looks kami Tameyasu or other Kisyu isido school. without the signature, the blade would pass NBTHK Hozon Shinsa without question." So a clear shinsa quality sword from Ishido school without the signature. I may well get into why I think this sword is indeed a 2nd gen Tameyasu in a later post (matching kantei points, having sword in hand, almost identical to extant documented examples etc) but that's another tale. I wanted to be 100% up front about the shortcomings of this sword. They say in nihonto " you buy the sword, not the signature" but it does seem nowadays that a signature is all the matters. I guess it can unless you do not want to spend time on study. The other issue was noticed on the grayscale scans of the sword from Aoi that the polish on this blade is not the high grade museum piece polish seen on some nihonto. Having the sword in had shows that to be the case, but more on that in a bit. The Great: This sword is big and heavy! It's not quite as massive as my Kanemasa, but it's really stout. It has a nice taper from hamachi end to kissaki end (matching kantei) and the kasane (width of blade) is large for an old era nihonto. This buy resulted in a great shirasya protection scabbard, a full set of koshirae with tsunagi, and a stunning oshigata trace of the sword and it's features. I used this paper to also find kantei points about the sword. They also threw in 2 nice sword bags for the koshirae and sword in shirasaya. Fast shipping! 1 week from Japan to my door and I think Aoi is in database as it breezed through customs. No added charges for antique items over 100 years old. I have 100% confidence in buying from them again and will soon I imagine. The less than perfect polish mentioned above actually helps to see the details of the choji hamon and utsuri as they appear. It's a funny coincidence that it worked out that way. Now that it's getting darker here I can see EVERYTHING. The hada is great and lot's of details to study. The Blown Away Great: This sword is fantastic. Hard to add more right now, it's been a few hours. Aoi grayscans: Kanemasa and Ishido School, brothers: Hamon from Aoi:
