I've been browsing for another Chinese sword for awhile and decided that until I'm sure of how much I want to spend, I'll get something low end. I ran across this on KoA and I figured what the hell $100. If it's crap I'll gift it to someone. I am really surprised at how nice it is for that price. I couldn't find much more on it than what KoA has on their page. Has anyone else handled one of these and/or know who the maker is? www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SW258&name=Short+Chinese+Liuyedao

If you contact KoA, they might give you more info.
My first sword was a liuyedao from Hero Sword (eBay seller 201liche). It sold under a part number for Shirly Sword. It was an assembly line product from one of the Chinese forges in Longquan.
While mine is a full length saber and has slightly different fittings, the blade looks almost exactly like yours. While that doesn't necessarily mean the stats of my sword apply to yours, I would still wager both came from the same place (or a place a block or two away that produces functionally equivalent products).
After some digging, I learned mine is pattern welded 1045 and 1060 high carbon steel. The blade is very robust but not too heavy. Mine is a welded bolt-to tang construction with the nut holding everything together. It has a glued on pommel cap. While this construction is kinda looked down on, the sword has been rock solid and has given excellent service.
For a budget sword, it looks nice and performs very well.
Dunno if any of that helps. Congrats on your new sword.

If that is indeed the sword in question and that is the tang I would avoid it like a bubonic rat with fleas.

Thanks, Timo, that is it. Slightly different fittings but I'm sure the blade is identical. Not the tang I had hoped for (can't hope for much at that price) but better than some I've seen. I'll probably do as you suggested and take it apart and fill it with epoxy just to be safe. I don't plan to use it for hard targets so it should be ok after that. If only they would spend as much attention to the tang as the blade itself. It came paper cutting sharp with no secondary bevel and polished well and the fullers are even.
It'll hold me over until I can get what I really want. Had my eye on a TFW Dan Dao or a Hanwei Oxtail Dao but what I really want is the Dynasty Forge Liueyedao with the black grip wrap or the Iron Tiger Forge Yanmaodao but both are back ordered and might no longer be available.
Thanks for the responses everyone.
