Imagine my first sentence above without the smiley. That (sarcasm) would simply be unimaginable (or what that dude said in The Princess Bride..."Inconceivable").

I can't speak to other corners of the world, but in Florida, a concealed carry permit is explicitly for weapons, not just guns. Concealed carry of knives (except for specifically defined knives such as a common pocket knife) is not legal without a CCP.
Interestingly (to me), open carry of swords seems to not be prohibited, but I wouldn't gamble that any given patrol officer knows that. I suspect that there will be legislation limiting the transport and carry of swords right after the first high-profile crime involving their use.
Of course, this is Florida, and there are a lot of remarkably well armed everyday folks around here.
(None of this is legal advice. Duh.)

Not sure why anyone would want to carry a knife if you can carry a gun. Seems a little blood thirsty if you ask me. That's probably why it isn't allowed

However, under certain circumstances, like at arms length (imagine the horror of a bowie), the knife is better. Remember, you don't run out of ammo, experience a jam...and you can slice bread with it .

I like to carry a knife because it's handy for tons of things that don't involve combat.
As for Pointman's story, with all due respect, it sounds like he managed to spend years as a Ranger and as a cop without learning anything about personal tactical safety. Or protecting his children. Or doing what he can to ensure his kids aren't orphaned. Based on what he wrote, I would respectfully but firmly decline to follow any advice or example he might give.
Just mtc.

You have a Glock (and blade) yet kick the guy in the ass? YOUR A COP, so of course you draw down on the intruder. Even after getting cut (why would you go for your blade FIRST) the punk pulls a revolver. That punk could have shot you (or the kids). What was this (cop/ranger) guy thinking? It should have ended with the punk held at gunpoint by the police officer...IN HIS OWN HOME. But no...a bloodbath and handgun pull by the bad guy. Again, WHAT WAS THIS SO CALLED OFFICER THINKING?!?

In Germany carrying weapons is generally not allowed, but you can carry even a machete if you have a "respectable reason", f.e. you are on your way to a heavy gardening job.

That's probably why it isn't allowed In some countries it is not possible to obtain a firearm. I played with the idea of getting a shotgun, half heartily, at one time and use the reason as hunting. Now that they country has past a no hunting law even that is out. I agree that a firearm trumps a knife. However...

A crossbow? For some inexplicable reason a crossbow doesn't count as weapon in Germany, so allowed to carry. But all carrying permissions require not to behave like a intimidation, which isn't easy with a crossbow.

I agree with those that either can't carry a firearm and those that would carry a knife for it's other practical applications. I carry a lockback for my EDC. There isn't a day that I don't use it for something or other: opening boxes or even using as a screwdriver. I've never used it in self defense.
Back to the topic, I prefer a knife that will work well for defense in that odd possibility but can be used for whatever tasks that will occur daily.
Single edge, sharpened clip point.

This cat seems to be doing his best to get himself killed proving that: Joerg Sprave

But my first love is a blowpipe. I’ve carried them as hiking sticks and made them disguised as a cane. I have one, for around the property use only, with a bayonet. An idea copied from the Dayaks. They work.

Many nations blade cultures are evolving, as immigration slowly (or not so slowly) changes the demographic. I think knife fighting increased on the streets of England. We have various blade length laws in America (some very stupid, as you can conceal carry/open carry firearms), but you can carry what you want (I think) in the woods.

The most violent gang on the street is called "The Sunflowers"...protecting their fertile soil "turf" from the sinister "hybrid tomato experts".
