well, I showed you all what I did with the old bastard sword I had in my closet, now I'd like to introduce you to another old friend of mine. A scimitar I got when I was about 12 (that's 23 years ago) and it wasn't new then. My grandmother picked it up somewhere in Mexico. it has, ummm HAD, an acid etching on one side that read "Si la muerte te desa fin conserva tu sangra fria." which near as I have been able to figure out means something like: "yes, the death of (desa fin = name?) will conserve your cold blood" I don't speak spanish so I really don't know that it doesn't mean "Jose makes the best ice cream" or something, but I did give translation a legitimate try on my own. on the other side is/was an etching of a pair of tigers slinking through a jungle. as you can see in the pictures it is badly rusted (not stainless anyway) and in need of some serious TLC. as a kid I beat this thing mercilessly. trees, rocks, other swords, anvils, vices, shelving, steel rods and girders, if it was metal I sought it out to bang this sword against it. I almost never found any bit of metal that could damage this blade at all and the few that did only left very small knicks and scratches, thus I dubbed this blade "Steelbane". ok now I'm an adult and I'm going to clean it up, put an edge on it, maybe eventually change the fittings and treat it with the respect it deserves. I'll keep you all posted on my progress and methods. I'm going to start with heavy application of 220 grit paper, then file the edge, then stone the edge and follow with wet/dry paper of 400-800-1000-2000. any suggestions on what I should do?
