Richmond VA has been fairly lucky in the past six years, avoiding some of the more wrathful winter storms such as the 2010 blizzard that shut down Wash DC for three days.
Finally caught up with us this week. Even so the storm has intensified since heading north and am grateful we only got a foot of snow. VDOT concentration has been on clearing primary routes. The level of effort has also depended on relative intensity of the snow event.
I wasn't scheduled to work fri-sun. Knew that probably wouldn't last. Snow started at about 10:30 friday and only had 3-4 inches southside. It was enough for the scafflaws to start calling in. Had one semprini who only lived 7 miles from the site, off of a major fire road, who wimpped out. Company put out a warning at 1700 that if you were rostered, get you ass to work. I went in at 15:00 carrying three days rations, meds, and blankets. Didn't expect relief until sunday.
Getting the 22 miles to work wasn't too bad. Petersburg interstates were pretty well cleared. Got closer to state 10 and the road conditions got tougher. Still, traffic was doing 30 and not a lot of folks going northbound. By 1800 the snow turned to sleet. Turned the fine powder to a doughy mess. Miracle of miracles, the midnight relief all turned out. The saturday crews all confirmed thru 1600. So I went home at 0030.
Getting back was tricky. Main roads were passable but that gummy, pasty snow was everywhere. stay in the tire tracks and under 30mph. Getting to the secondary roads near the house roads had 5 ish inches of snow on them and you had to go slow but didn't dare stop. Tricky slithery driving but got in the house by 0115.
Saturday was supposed to see a lite snow with no more than 3 inches added packing. Look that way in the morning, but afternoon the wind and rate of fall got serious again. Went to the door about 1800 and my 5 ish inches had nearly doubled and drifting with 30 ish mph gusts had piled 11 inches at my door.
I'm home. Power is still on. Nobody has called me. Only problem at the moment is an out of his mind cat whose been house bound for two days and probably will have to be for 3 more.
No compalints. Lots of big cities coping with +2 feet of snow this morning.
