I'm actually a couple miles northeast of Richmond city proper, little town called Mechanicsville. Lousy place, really. Anyway, here's a crappy picture, courtesy of my pathetic cell phone camera, if what it looked like from the bottom of one side of our driveway after three or four hours of shoveling yesterday morning: Nothing too bad, really; family of northern folk as we are (PA, mostly) but what sucks is VDOT. Still no plows, could've used them before it all froze over. Now they may as well not bother. Folks with their big 4x4s have been making tracks, which is fine while it's wet and malleable, but now those tracks are just ice, with walls of ice to either side. If only this hill weren't so stupidly steep... Oh well. Nobody asked me for my opinion before taking me to pack up and move, so I don't get to complain about the bad location, right? Still, had to call out of work because my poor scooter just couldn't do it. Heck, the biggest, baddest truck in our family nearly wound up I'm the ditch just trying to move a few more feet up the driveway. No need for four-wheel-drive, he'd said; "it never snows here." Except, you know, every year we've been here, two or three times, just enough to shut the whole town down for several days each time... Meanwhile, my friends out in the Radford/Pulaski area are far better off...with more snow.

I remember it best as the place that I had to slow down before hitting the open road on my way to my cabin up on the Panunkey. Used for hunting/fishing or just to get away. Brings back memories.

"The place I had to slow down" is one way to describe it...but not in a particularly positive sense. Lots of hunters here, though, definitely. A group of them like to park across the street and send dogs into the swamp/woods and just shoot wildly. It's great when they start at 5am on a weekend...

Managed the trip to work on the scooter today. Still no plows down our neighborhood, mother's fiance barely got his truck to the top of the road. Our road is a wreck, but once you get to the end of it, things are suddenly, as if by magic, much flatter and smoother. Still ice, granted, but the kind you can actually move on.
The one "main" road in this town was actively being plowed as I was driving on it, so it was pretty well clear. Bit of a backup over one bridge going over the interstate (295, I think?) but other than that, mostly smooth sailing.
Still took me nearly half an hour to go 3.5 miles, a trip that normally takes about 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Hopefully the warmer temperatures and sunlight will have most if the other roads drivable by the time I head home.
Good thing about snow here is, as much of a pain as it is to deal with, at least it's short-lived.

Haven't had snow at home for decades (living in Florida), just moved to Georgia this week and got our fist snow (sort of) yesterday morning. Maybe a 1/16 of an inch? I don't think GDOT owns a plow. They had a big blizzard a couple years ago which shut down the city and trapped a lot of people on the highway, now there are sheds along the sides which have stocks of road salt and stuff, don't know if they got any plows though, I've only been here a few days. I built a snowman though.
