Good review Dave. Thank you very much. Glad Mr. Guinhut and or his supplier got this one right. It is about time. This is a beauty and I hope it will fly out of the shop. When people follow the link they can see all the detail on the scabbard. Something to behold. For the money this a very excellent deal, even with added shipping to the States.

Ooh, that's purty...
Pity about the scabbard fit, though.

Granted, but I've always seen "easy fixes" as something that should be done before I've bought the thing. Either way, a tempting package...

Do you know what steel was used to make this beautiful sword?

Thank you for the response. I've been looking for shamshirs and such with the large, beautiful, curve this one has. I know you can find antiques for a decent price, but i'm looking to actually cut with them. This looks like a great candidate.

I have neither so I don’t speak with any deal of authority but Univeral’s Shamshir scales are held with three rivets compared to Windlass’ two. Not only that, Universal’s tang drops down at the end of the grip following the lines of the handle making it stronger than Windlass’ Shamshir, which is a weak point with Windlass. Windlass’ Shamshirs have been known to break in this area.

The Universal shamshir looks OK. Not so good for a Persian shamshir, if being historically fussy - much less curvature than average, maybe a little shorter, Persian shamshirs are usually unfullered, the pommel is Ottoman/Western rather than Persian. Weight and balance look OK.
Is this based on a Western mameluke sword?

I think Timo nailed it, except I wouldn't have known anything as specific...I just know he mentioned all the bits that "just don't seem right" to what I'm used to seeing of the type.

From what I've read on scimitars the blade ran between 30 and 36 inches and the Universal blade is 29 3/4 inches so that's close. I know it doesn't come close to the EC but it looks like it's got some advantages over the Windlass like brass fittings, stronger contruction and a little less money. Would I like to have the EC, sure I would but since Dave didn't mention the price I'll guess around $600 or more. I would pay that or more for a Viking sword or Medieval sword but not a scimitar.

I'd happily pay that for a good scimitar/shamshir, one that stood as a good representation of the type as well as being a quality weapon in its own right, but I don't think I'd spend that on this sword. Only because I still think of $600+ as a significant sum. Were I wealthier, I'd drop it more easily.

I didn't even notice the link. $410-ish is not bad at all, but a tax outside my own reach at present. By the time I'll have wrangled that much loose change, the Euro will be back up. Ah well, at least I have pretty pictures.

I'd be interested in seeing how this compares to windlass' version. They seem very similar but the universal does look a bit nicer with the brass fittings compared to windlass' lacquered steel (I think that's what the fittings are). Nice looking scimitar Dave, not a type of sword I'm that interested in, but I like it

I think the MRL/Windlass scimitar was based off a piece from Hank Reinhardt's collection. www.hankreinhardt.com/Sale/Swords/Swords%20039.htmBut does anyone know if the Empire Costume's scimitar is a replica of an antique or is it just based off the time period?
