I've been watching it and I absolutely LOVE it. I had great doubts whether they would be able to do the books justice but even though there are the usual historical inaccuracies regarding the clothing and equipment, they managed to portray the characters perfectly and matched the atmosphere of Cornewell's book very well. The plot is excellent as is the character development, undoubtably because they stick very closely to the books (for the most part).
Uthred's sword... well. Except for the hideous pommel and almost hand-and-a-half grip, it's decent. Not a fan of the damn back carry but at least he makes it work, you actually see him draw it (though not putting it back off course). The other swords in the show certainly are fairly accurate for the time period.
The fight sequences are well done, too. Not over the top, nothing too flashy but intense and even for a HEMA-nut it's possible to watch them without cringing. That alone says a lot.

Is there a way to watch it without TV reception ? Like we can watch Vikings on the History Channel website.

I too have enjoyed it quite a bit and they have stayed fairly close to the book. I find Uhtreds sword to be interesting, Its not serpent-breath as described in the book, but its interesting.

To tell you the truth the only good film swords I've seen in a long time where in Arn: Knight Templar and that's only because Albion made their swords. If you can't get the swords or clothing right how good can the picture be.

If you can't get the swords or clothing right how good can the picture be. Can be excellent. If it's a good movie with good swords, and then the producers insist that each major character have a distinctive sword, not like the (accurate) swords carried by the masses, it isn't going to break the movie. If it has a good plot and good acting, it can be a good movie, whether the costuming, including armour and weapons, is accurate. Worked for Shakespeare. If the only good thing the movie has going for it is the costuming, then bad costuming will kill it. Good costuming isn't enough to make a bad movie good. A similar thing can be said about fight choreography. 300, Braveheart, 300 Spartans ('60s), Spartacus (Kirk Douglas, '60s), Gladiator, and more, all worked as movies despite inaccurate costuming.

The old movies you didn't expect any better but with some recent movies that took the time to do it right it make it harder to except the screw ups. I liked Braveheart and Gladiator because even though they were a little off they where close enough and great movies. Mel's sword even though it was wrong it still looked like a real sword. But when you see swords that look like something made by a mad man who never even seen a real sword, I just can't enjoy a movie like that. I also understand that Vikings look more bad a-- in leather than they do in linen or wool. I guess I should be happy that they seem to have given up on the horned helmets. I guess I'm just getting more picky in my old age.

A "little off" is being very kind to Braveheart. If Braveheart was "close enough", Vikings in fur bikinis and horned helmets with two-handed swords would be close enough. The armour, the weapons, the clothing: bad. The clothing was done deliberately, to conform to expectations. Yellow Scottish war shirts wouldn't look Scottish enough to modern viewers; they expect tartan. Armour and weapons were just bad (not just Wallace's sword).

The Seventh Son, as horrible as the movie was (couldn't bear to finish it) had really nice swords from A&A.
