I'm looking to make a scabbard for a bastard sword I've had for a long time and would like to know where a good place to pick up hardwoods would be. I live in the Charleston area of South Carolina, but I don't expect anyone here to know the area. just looking for examples of the type of place I need to look. I tried Lowes. They only had oak and red oak and that was in really thick planks. I was hoping for somethig like rosewood, maple or something and thin, like 1/2" thick by 3" wide by 36" long or something like that. would a hardwood flooring place have what I'm looking for? if you've made a scabbard before, where did you get your wood and what type of wood did you use?

Dan Davis of Wildwolf forge made an excellent set of directions for how to make a scabbard easy, and what woods to avoid. It's a later post to a thread in sword customising somewhere. Have a search.
Here it is, have a read through this thread, dans post is page 2: /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=1833&page=2

Dan's post is a great reference for instructions. Also, most custom scabbard makers I've heard discussing the subject recommend stabilized poplar. I was able to find various appropriate pieces of stabilized poplar at my local Home Depot. It was located in the area with wooden cabinetry and floor coverings, not in the lumber section.
