Interesting, it is the exact same furniture except with a fullered blade. Was going to say that's strange if they're the same as mine is nowhere near whippy, Just speculation but it looks like RK is having them build in the same shop as John Lee does. Doesn't mean the blades are the same but they use the same furniture and that's fine because i like it. The grip held up nicely during HEMA training and felt comfortable.

Ronin might just be buying the furniture from the same foundry as John Lee.

Ronin might just be buying the furniture from the same foundry as John Lee. It's more likely that the forge is making swords for different brands. Probably in various price ranges

Great review! The tip on mine bent during flex testing. Other than that, what you said... Very nice for the price point. I will probably take off about an inch of tip when I sharpen it.

It sounds like these might give the hanwei tinkers a run for some of the better budget european swords. I'll keep the RK european line in mind if I were to get a budget longsword to go with my tinker arming sword.

Nice review and yea I see a big improvement over the initial models they came out with. Looks pretty and as was mentioned above, now its down to durability. But if these are anything like the Ronin katana then I don't think durability will be an issue. But you never know, different blade types and all.
I'm actually happy with this turn for this line, with prices going up again in the market these will be a nice alternative for entry sub $300 buyers.

I wasn't going to comment on this model anymore but I figured I should let others know that mine takes a set very easily when flexing. The bent tip I mentioned earlier was accompanied by a very bent/bowed blade when flexed. My older hex nut model doesn't set when flexed. If you tap the blade with your finger nail you hear a distinctive "ping" sound. The new model, when tapped, sounds more like "thunk". I'm assuming the heat treat is insufficient. Overall the fit and finish is leaps and bounds above the older models though.

I'll try to get a vid done in the morning and post it then.

I hope this vid works. I've never posted one before.
The first one is my Euro 2 with threaded tang. The second is the new peened model 7. I hope you can see the bend in the blade after flexing. The multiple flexes you see after are my attempt to straighten the blade. I also hope you can hear the difference in the sound of the steel. If the video is unclear or doesn't work, I'll try again with possibly a dark background.

Unfortunately the video does not work for me. I'm honestly surprised to hear your issues with this line. I have had no issues whatsoever with my model #9. You should report this to the SBG store. It may just be a flaw in the heat treatment, which SBG should be willing to replace. Hopefully it'll work out for you.

E-mail already sent to SBG Store. Awaiting reply. Don't expect to hear from anyone over the weekend but the warranty mentions something about normal usage... I haven't cut anything yet but I can pretty much guarantee this blade will take a set on light targets. It takes very little effort to flex it into a set.

believe me, the blade is taking a set. All I have to record with is my JVC action cam with the screen on the side. I tried to get it on video but it's not that easy to do.

That's too bad... Definitely an issue with the heat treatment and a solid reason for return or replacement. Hopefully this is simply a miss in QC on this specific sword and not the whole batch.
One thing Chris and Paul have always been good on regarding the Ronin line is guaranteed quality and prompt buyer friendly return/replacement policy. With the evidence you've shown here I'm sure they'll have an apology and replacement sent your way when you directly contact them.

hope so. Otherwise I really love this sword. the fit and finish are perfect! Nicely balanced and lively. I also have four ronin dojo pro #17s that I love. Most solid out of the box katanas I've owned to date. I've chopped them into a chopping block and bent them back and forth with no set or edge damage. Same for the Ronin euro #2. All solid. I think this one is just a lemon...

Does anyone know if the peened type 9 is also taking a set so easily? And has the thud sound?
