So far I haven't had any issues with sets, and mine rings like a bell.

That's good to hear. I've been contacted by both Paul and Chris and my replacement is on the way! I won't go into details but awesome customer service from both! I feel like I have insurance on my purchases. Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting my replacement. I really like that sword.

I did a test on a prototype, and I am not sure exactly what model it would be comparable to, but it did not ring. I think a big reason for this is how the grip is assembled. It was filled with an epoxy type substance. Some of it was viable through the gaps in the cross-guard and blade and it ran all the way to where the peen was. I am guessing the epoxy helps keep things stable and fill in gaps but I don't know for sure. Anyway, the one I tested did the same, but it did not take a set easily. I bent it quite a bit to get it to break. It did not want to bend and it did not say bent.

I have the Viking model and there are no issues. Of course this is a shorter blade than the ones being discussed.

How does the viking handle? I'm thinking of buying it next, as long as these issues are cleared up.

Matthew, My Euro model 2 has had the handle epoxied on as well. Still rings like a bell. I don't know if that is a factor but I'm no expert. I have also epoxied the handle on my Windlass Classic Medieval and it "rings" more than any other blade I have. I have no idea whether or not it makes a difference.

Could someone clue me in on this mystical RK Viking sword? I haven't been able to find it in my hours of frantic Googling.

Findlithui, I totally understand where you're coming from. I see good things in the future for this line. I also expect growing pains. My euro 7 is leaps and bounds ahead of the euro 2 in terms of fit and finish and I really like my euro model 2. I like plain and simple fittings as long as the blade is solid. I would be willing to pay more for these particular blades once the smithing process is hammered out... so to speak.

Still would like to see someone really put them to the test like the first models were. Cutting bottles and cardboard isn't a real see what it can take test. Hopefully the bent blade was a isolated case but only time will tell. It's good to see they're standing behind their swords but also hope they picked up the shipping both ways. Nothing more annoying then hearing the "send it back and we'll replace it " which adds another $15 to $20 to the cost of your sword.

Chris at Ronin has gone above and beyond for me on this issue. Without getting into details, I have been well taken care of.

OK, it only took me 4 months, but i've managed to do some proper cutting tests with this sword. Unfortunately, I don't believe anyone got any footage of it and I had completely forgotten about taking any, my apologies.
I was initially quite skeptical as to this sword's cutting potential as i'd tried it on several water bottles and milk bottles with mixed results. Most of the times the smaller bottles would go flying as if I had hit them with a baseball bat, despite proper edge alignment. I could also just not cut paper with this sword, just wouldn't do it.
This made me quite nervous for proper cutting tests on tatami and banana tree and I was anxious to whether it would cut at all.
First cut was on banana tree, approx 13cm in diameter, not a hard target by any means but as I said, I wasn't certain as to what was going to happen. Completely overswung, had no idea if I had even hit the target or missed. Upon looking up the banana tree was still just sitting there..
..Then the top half slowly slid off from the damn near surgical, straight cut.
Needless to say I was impressed. Several more cuts with not even half the power yielded very similarly impressive results.
30cm approx diameter banana tree was the next challenge, and the sword cut through it like butter. I could swing it single handed, half power and it would just glide through the entire thing.
15cm tatami roll next, and the same results as before. Effortlessly cut through targets, both single and two handed.
We had a lot of banana tree parts left over, so we ended up throwing them at each other to test hand-eye coordination and thrusts. The sword performed beautifully, the point went exactly where I wanted in thrusts, I even had several attempts where the banana tree chunk would slide nearly all the way up to the hilt.
All in all, I was extremely impressed. Coming from initial tests where it would turn water bottles into baseballs to performing better than many katanas that other people were using, I think it was held in a fair bit of awe by the end of the day.
If we do any more test cut days i'll definitely try and get some footage with it, but I hope this report is enough in the meantime.
