There was some interest in the new MRL Suontaka sword when it showed up on the back of their last catalog...
Here's the thread.

Now...for some hands on info and thoughts.
I was in Atlanta last week, and decided to stop off at MRL's brick and mortar store. If you're ever in the area, highly recommended...great staff, and fun to just wander.
So I asked to see a Suontaka that was hanging right next to a Ulfbhert...
I won't post pics, its on their site now.
So some thoughts on this sword...I didn't buy one due to current finances going to brakes, tires, etc...sigh.
Here's my thoughts when I handled it.
The sword is very pretty, I *CONFIRMED* the fittings are copper plated brass. Not zinc.
The sword is pretty, the grinds are straight, with a little wave which you see on occasion in MRL blades.
I didn't check for distal tapir, I completely spaced on it when I had it in hand...
Hilt is dark stained wood with the metal inlays glued in. Pretty good fitting with only slight gaps that the glue hid nicely.
Tang was nicely peened thru the pommel.
Now, the sword felt...identical to my Ulfbhert...so balance was about 4 1/2" forward of the hilt, and it had presence. It's not light and whippy, it felt solid.
All in all, I'd say it's a good sword for the price, the castings are very clean, fit and finish is good.
Are there prettier versions out there, you bet. But not for this price.
If I hadn't just dropped about 3x the sword's price on my car...I'd have brought one home with me...
So take it for what it's worth, my humble $.02 from a guy who had a chance to hold one for a few minutes.
I look forward to a real review...
