I did add a Dane axe to my collection since I last commented on this post.

My new CS Viking battle axe. Not much to look at compared to some, but better than out-of-the-box BORING. Walnut stained handle with a dyed hemp cord wrap. No beauty contest winner. "She ain't good lookin', but she sho' can dance."

For those of you interested, Cold Steel has changed the paint coating on their line of tomahawks. These 'hawks used to come coated in thick, shiny black paint that was nearly impossible to remove. They have changed over to a thin coat of flat black paint that is MUCH EASIER to remove. ( I hope they do the same on the war hammer!) Just FWIW........

"She ain't good lookin', but she sho' can dance." How does it handle compared to the viking hand axe? About the same, but different....If that makes any sense. The battle axe is a bit heavier, and the balance a little more forward due to the shape of the blade. It's still light, and swings like a dream. I wouldn't go chopping down trees with either one, but from a weapons-standpoint they are both fantastic. Re-seating the head properly and wrapping the haft are a must, I'd say. Get one and spend some time making it look and feel good. You won't be sorry.

I’ve managed to get the spike hawk in county by declaring it as a garden tool, and added a war hammer haft to it. That one is going to have to do it for me. I know I am in the minority when I say that liked the old finish. Admittedly it isn’t pretty but durable and excellent at doing its job, preventing rust. I declared it as a garden tool and as long as I had it I have put it to use as such multiple times cutting roots, breaking up cement like hardened dirt, even cut wood a few times and the finish remains and no rust after several years.

If you are using it as a tool...which is really what it is...it ought to last a hell of a long time, because that old, shiny black stuff is a 'beeyatch royale' to get off.

"She ain't good lookin', but she sho' can dance." I think its quite nice. With some leather and traditional Cree style decoration, feathers and what not, I think it would be a little TOO pretty One might consider that sacrilege, but I have the blood of both in me, so I am allowed 😎
