That looks really good! Great job. The sword somehow seems both big and small... by itself, it looks imposing with the comparably wide blade, in hand however it seems quite slim and quick. Cool.
Btw, you remind me a lot of high school teacher I had during my year in the US... that's a compliment, the guy was absolutely awesome, we still write from time to time ;)

Thanks guys. It was a fun project and now my collection has one of the few basket style sword types that I like.
@ Lukas - Funny, I actually was a High School history teacher back in the mid -'90s....well sort of anyway, a substitute teacher, never ended up getting a full time job as the market in my area at that time was saturated...but I digress. I was all "dressed up" ready to head out for work this morning when I took those pics.

Looks nice!
On a related note, I will never be able to buy the stock Hanwei Mortuary sword again, now that I know what it can become.

True, but this is even more solid :P Also, the fact that the stock mortuary sword is OOP makes it harder. You can only get the practice (blunt) version. I am okay with it being blunt, but not sure if the blade material or geometry would be the same between the two

from the pictures I've seen the practical looks like a steel bar with a half @$$ fuller so this looks leaps and bounds better

I LIKE that grip :). What elements are you "not in love with"? Termination of the wire on the ends? Yes, basically. It's nice but I feel like it could have been better. I do like it though, like it a lot actually. Practice makes perfect as they say. I think that is part of the reason I do this, the learning part.

"Heirloom" blades for period hilts is historically accurate. I like your interp much better than the weal backswords usually marketed. Congrats!

Bryan, what did you do with the practical blade and could it be re-purposed into a Jian ? ? ?

Awwww mannnn! That is one excellent build my friend. We need karma back because you deserve a LOT. This sword is sparking interest in basket hilts for me. I might have to find one of those argentine baskets. I think there are replicas of them being sold. I would totally frankensword a blade onto one

That is a fantastic sword Bryan. Congrats on your effort. Btw, I've been a full time HS English teacher for 14 years... time flies!

Two nice thick Turk heads would be nice on the grip, but I have seen what you have to do to make one and that I would go crazy trying. I think I see what Brian is on about with the grip. It looks a little naked in my view. Something is missing on either end. Maybe a socket, like a Fuchi on a katana, but then one on top and the other at the basket end. But this is just squible from my part. The sword looks awesome as is and the way the tang was treated... it looks like you worked on it with a laser. So clean! Yep. Bring back the Karma thing.

Man that turned out nice! I've kind of considered the Hanwei Tinker bastard to be a bit on the smallish side. Not so much anymore. Well done.
