how much did you have to widen the slot by? also to everyone else who has this blade do they all have that L etched on them?

Not really sure exactly...probably at least 2 mm but I remove, then test fit, repeat over and over again till I get a nice tight fit.
And yes both the H/T blade as well as the stock blade have the "L" for some reason..

Progress pics. Well I finally "crossed the Rubicon" and cut the tang. Its always a bit tough to start the cutting...no going back. I still have some additional work to get the fit right...I go slow, removing a bit of steel here and there till everything fits just right, so the tang is still not exactly the right length but all the hard stuff is done. Totally new threads as well.

Looks awesome. Serious enough for a battlefield use.

That looks awesome, Bryan. I've discovered a bit of a weakness for mortuary hilt swords over the last year or so; can't wait to see the finished result.

some additional pics of the sword broken back down.
The trick I have discovered with this one is getting the tang end, the part that matches up with the keyed pommel, the correct length. I am talking about the slightly less wide section at the end, right before the newly threaded portion. BTW, original blade and nut are threaded M6-1, exactly the same as the H/T blade, so that was nice to see and meant I already had the correct die.
As mentioned I still need to lengthen a bit more the "less wide" section so the pommel moves further down the tang by approx. 1/4", cut off excess threaded section and slightly open the slot on the other piece, what ever its called. It fits right under the basket and sort of acts like a big washer maybe? Or its just decorative...who knows but it also had to be widened like the basket slot to accommodate a larger tang width.

My guess is that "washer" is there to give added support to the weak point where the basket and blade meet. The basket is quite a bit thinner than the usual crossguard or hilt. I believe my Hanwei Cromwell has a similar design.

Yeah, Bryan, I ordered a Mortuary from KOA a few years ago and that's the exact impression I got, a "toy". Sent it right back and got a real sword. LOL I like what you're doing there tho. I'm liking the look of some basket hilts lately.

A little under 6"...my guess is once totally complete it will be 5 3/4".

Getting real close. Everything is fitted. Ringing like a bell. I had to shim a bit the sided of the guard slot but just a bit. Honestly not sure they where even needed. The way this thing goes together, one you tighten down the pommel nut, that washer thing and the grip really compress the works together, then the whole basket is screwed to the pommel...its totally locked down. Right now the POB is just under 6", so it's no floater but still feels good. I believe, correct me if I am wrong that these types of swords were blade forward so hopefully 6" is not too out of line...but who knows. Sorry but they weren't really tip heavy. There might be some that had a forward balance like but the basket you are using is small and light with a tiny pommel. If you but the H/T Bastard on a Cromwell basket, the POB would be between 3'' to 4''. Maybe even under 3''. Counting the same mort that you have, I have 5 different morts and the one with the farthest POB is 5 1/2.

All done. Like the grip but don't love it. Need to get better at working with wire, especially around either end, top and bottom. Some sort of decorative band or something would be nice, but.... The POB ended up being 5 3/4", which is a decent amount but the blade is pretty light to begin with, so it does not feel at all heavy, but it does have some nice blade presence. I finally scratched my Mortuary itch.
I am 6'1"...and it still does not seem very big, but its big enough and I like the way it turned out.
