Two new additions to the heap of iron on the floor of Casa Ulahn.
Both are well made examples of Historismus times from around the end of the 19th century. Belle Epoque.
At least, that is what I think......
I cleaned them a bit with oil, but that is all I did. They have to wait their turn.
All detail was done by hand.
All parts are thick and sturdy.
That main gauche blade starts out at 6.5mm thick and tapering begins at the cutting edge.
Blade length is 31cm and it is 3 cm wide. Total length is 44.5cm. Weight is 623 grams. POB snap in the middle of the guard.
French lilly on the ricasso.
The rapier blade starts with a thickness of 6mm, with a length of 88cm. Width is 21mm.
Though the rapier blade is well made and very well tempered, ready for use, it has too much flex to be a good rapier blade.
It pierces the thick cardboard shipping box with ease, but still , I would have liked it stiffer.
The measurements of the main gauche blade would make a rapier blade much more to my liking.
But since the inhabitants of the Costumer Service and Outreach Department are all long dead and gone,
I will have to live with it, which is not too much trouble because I love this combo to bits.
I will compair the Hanwei Taza with this oldy, just for fun.
The Hanwei: Old Taza:
Blade length 96 cm. 88 cm.
width 20 mm 21 mm.
Thickness 6 mm 6 mm.
Length over all 116.5 cm 109 cm.
Weight 1003 grams 1020 grams.
POB 13 cm 6.5 cm
Conclusion: The Hanwei has the longer and slightly stiffer blade. This last could be because it is fullered.
Though the Hanwei weighs slightly less, the POB is way up the blade compaired to the old Taza.
The old Taza is more a fencer when looked at that POB of 6 cm. Here the weight sits in the hilt.
The Hanwei takes more effort to operate and feels quite cumbersome compaired to the old Taza.
Point control on the old one is better too, but then the blade is too flexible and too short.
In the end they seem to be quite close, it might be just a personal thing. They have very distinct characters.
I wonder how the old Taza would do with a Hanwei blade.......
Cheers.
