barrack blankets are the best material for padding a gambe with, that's what all the guys used where I did re-enactment.

tsafa: they should be if they are barrack blankets mate our gambes had to be slightly thicker than normal because we also had axes and at one point a polearm (that quickly got banned because on of the guys almost got concussed, we all cheered because he was a numpty but still, don't want to concuss anyone we like ) and all the non professionally made ones used barrack blanket as padding.

According to the manufacturer... "Made of five layers! Three layers of wool, an outer layer of canvas, and an inner layer made of soft cloth. Stiched through." I think that should be good no? Oswyn, I'm surprised you don't use something padded on your arms - so far I get hit on the arms a lot more than on the body. Get your arms out of the way. It took me a trio of sessions with a fellow SCAdian who is a riot cop in real life before I finally started keeping my arms back...

Just be sure that it is more than a shirt with padded sleeves which is what I got when I bought the 'Padded Gambeson' from MRL- the only thing padded was the sleeves! Ahhh...lessons learned!
Looks good on Casual Fridays and that's about it. In my very limited experience, you won't get a good gambeson for cheap unless you luck up on one in eBay or something like that.

Does anyone have experience in the Locksley gambeson from MRL? I've always been curious about that one. I'm guessing it's mostly a fantasy costume piece (loosely based on the one in the Robin Hood movie with Kevin Costner) but I wonder if it provides any actual protection. museumreplicas.com/p-429-robin-of-locksley-gambeson.aspx

I have one. Recently picked it up as the basis for a wedding outfit for a "Mid-Summer's Night" theme wedding. It is going to work fine for that.
I do not recommend this as part of a functional fight outfit, you would have studs flying and the material is not heavy enough. The padding is there, but nominal. The outer material is a light brown corduroy. The construction is fine, with good finishing touches.
Cheers

Instead of studs, they should have had grommets through out the gambson so you can use it as an arming jacket. I don't know about how well those removable sleeves could hold up a pair of eblow cops and vambraces. You should be able to hang spalders on the shoulders. These Mickey Mouse companies do not understand the purpose of studs in armor. The studs are really rivets that would be holding plates and splints in place on the inside. Seems like its meant more for Ren Fairs then hardcore fighting practice.

You're absolutely right, Bill- anything you find in the MRL catalog especially is going to be more decorative than practical. Including some of their swords.
Seeing as you actually use yours for battle, anyone looking for something in kind would need only visit this thread or speak to you.
A well made gambeson can cost more than some swords, I'm finding...since I've not joined SCA (had a bad experience over email of all places) its unlikely atm that I'll be needing something so tough, but I want one nonetheless.

I good gambeson will not only be expensive, but you will only get so much millage out of it because it is meant to be light. Mine cost $325 and is already showing signs of wear after one year. It is still fully functional and I should get at least 2 more years out of it, but that is about it. Then I will buy another one, if not sooner. Mind you I use it at least two times a week. The durability issue may be a big concern for some people and if so should consider other armoring options.
