It's not what you dreamed about how your Katana was made. No little bald Japanese or Chinese guy sweating to death with a hammer at a forge.

That was the first time I’ve seen “Japanese Sword Making in Longquan, China” and found it educational. I think that OSHA would have a field day there. But then because of the lack of such interference China has a lower production overhead. I think maybe “boiler maker’s ears” will need renaming. My uncle who worked for years at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was deaf, needing to be shouted at. He was retired when I first knew him back in the early '40s, and I think he retired early. I had heard of boiler maker’s ears but found out only years later that he worked in the boiler shop.

Part of my job is looking at health and safety. It really makes my hair stand on end when I see the working condition of these people. They must really suffer from breathing problems later on in life.

I feel a bit better about my decision to not support the kind of operations with working conditions like this. Rather pay more and not contribute to or enable what we're seeing here.

That's one way to look at it. But then again by not buying their products you're also putting them out of business which means all those little guys are now unemployed. Either way the little guy suffers, do you let them starve today or have health problems many year from now. I think things like that should be up to the person if they are willing to take the risks. As long as they know the risks they should have the choice.

The only bad part about watching these videos of the sword factory in Longquan China is that I want that Samurai statue at the beginning of the video for my Japanese garden.
