It feels like its been a while since we had a pick a sword thread. I was just checking over my collection and oiling as required and the question accoured to me, which one would I grab if I had to? ill keep it simple; - choose your own world, zombies, pandemic, invasion or the lights just go out etc - you already have an appropriate firearm / bow and ammo - you already have a knife on your hip/pack (dirk in my case) - you already have an axe in your pack/car/home - you have spears already sorted as well. - Pick a sword from your own collection
- assume you have a scabbard and appropriate rig for all your swords - all this happens tomorrow in your town/city - your skillset is what it is, you might be trained or you might be a backyard hero like me. You might get better but for now your skills are what they are now. - I might add a few more rules depending on responses i haven't got much on this long weekend and thought this might be a bit of fun I might even get a chance to do a bit or a writeup on my fallen dirk. Have fun Paul

I seem to fall in and out of favor with my swords but at the moment and given the above constraints I would go with my Longship Armoury Silvia. Given my skillset I find a cut/slashing sword such as the Silvia to be ideal. The sword itself is of a pretty high standard and would/should withstand the demanding environment it's headding into, I also have a bit of confidance wielding it (perhaps false confidance) and I feel it's also a visual intimadating sword which is also an advantage.

My Hanwei Banshee is my go to ZPAW sword. While not a large sword, or the most spectacular sword, it makes up for that in toughness and utility. While I love my other swords, if it were ZPAW the Banshee is the one I will take with me. The smaller size actually becomes a benefit when in tight spaces like hallways not to mention less of an encumbrance while carrying. It's toughness means I can use this sword as a brush clearing machete, a wood chopper, and other useful tools.
While it would be nice to bring my Kissaki Moroha, or my Malatesta. The Banshee wins every time I consider what I might want to bring. It just is way more realistically functional.

I would have to go with my VA falchion. It would be more practical than my other swords, and I'd be more confidant with it. Also it's not too long so it would be easier to carry.

Hanwei banshee as well, for all the reasons mentioned already.

I hate to blow my own horn but I would go with one of my gladius, or the tactical sword I just finished making.

BTW, I am a bit of a prepper. My Banshee is actually part of my INCH pack gear load out. INCH if you don't know is an I'm Never Coming Home pack. Basically a BOB (bug out bag) except bigger and for indefinite time rather than just 72 hrs. The Banshee stays strapped to my quiver most times, which in turn is strapped to the side of my pack.

I'm building a custom dadao sword for a customer. Almost 37" long, S7 steel, 0.28" thick. This one will be front heavy and I guess it will have a POB 4-5" from the front. This sword will be my best chopper. But my go to weapon right now would be either or

Love that falcata, Digs; I'd love something like that in a zombie apocalypse. As for me, out of the swords I own, that's a pretty simple matter, seeing as I only own three (four if you want to get technical, but the CS Cutlass Machete is, in the end, not exactly a sword). I'd pick my Hanwei Practical Dao/Kung Fu Sword: The niuweidao was favored by less skilled swordsmen (which I am) of the day because, as the saying goes: when you're taking off pounds of flesh with each swing, it doesn't particularly matter where you're striking. And at 1.5lbs ( maybe 2lbs with the scabbard), it's a fairly lightweight addition to my pack, but it still sports a 27" blade, so it has a fair amount of reach, particularly over most machetes. Additionally, while I'm not overly fond of the scabbard, this is the one sword I'd feel fairly justified in mounting on my back to keep it out of the way as there's a slot running down the length of the scabbard to within 9" of the tip, so drawing it would be the simplest thing in the world; it also has two rings, ostensibly for mounting it on a belt, that could be used to fasten a rig made of re-purposed leather belts or even folded duct tape, which could be done quite quickly if the need arose.

If I'm alone and have to carry it on my body along with all my other stuff, this is the blade I'm taking with me:
If I have a vehicle and/or a group so we can split things up a bit (which would be my plan in the first place), I'm taking a longsword, too. It's the weapon I'm most comfortable with and IMO the single best hand-to-hand combat weapon out there. At least as long as we're talking unarmored fighting. Only problem: it's a huge pain to lug around and if I have to carry a lot of other stuff at the same time, that's just not going to happen. If it's zombies I'm up against, I'd pick my customized ATrim because it's just a devastating cutter and thrusting doesn't really factor in against the walking dead, nor does any sophisticated sword work. Anything else and I'm taking the sword in my signature.

I only have two swords to choose from, my Windlass Sword of Homildon Hill or my DSA Excalibur. While my Excalibur is heavier & therefore slower, I believe it to be tougher & more durable. With the likelihood of having to fight an adversary also armed with a sword being very low, I'd go with my Excalibur.

From the swords I have? My Albion Steward.
Although I hope to acquire a Talhoffer (or perhaps a Agincourt or Ringeck if they come up on the classifieds) soon-ish, and I would choose that over the Steward.

Either this - It is the Army Order 37 sword after all. Or this - And of course my sidearm knife would be its companion -

Hmm, that's a tough call. Probably my Hanwei shashka, once I'd tightened up the hilt (probably filled any gaps with loads of glue, too) for the sake of the narrow profile and my personal ease of handling. Not the most practical blade, but since we're already allowed a knife, that would be either my 15" kukri or my Citadel Trapper, either of which would cover all of my "practical" needs.
Or for pure intimidation factor, my big old "Khyber" would probably hold the average bandit far enough back...

I'd pick my ATrim Makers Mark XVIa, a fast and lethal cut-and-thrust sword.
