So I just recently got into playing magic, was curious anybody else here play. I run a mono red dragon deck and am in the process of building another deck with the fate reforged set that just came out. Who else plays, post your decks!

i learned to play last year from some kids i work with. it was fun for a while but i am well over it now. kind of got boring after while. my biggest problem is that you need to try and keep up w/ the updates. $cheme$.
i really prefer games where everyone has equal opportunity of winning. not changing based on the equipment you have.
i guess some of the tournaments they open the packs there and build them there and that makes it more equal. but i never did any of those.
i like go. go is a great game.

my biggest problem is that you need to try and keep up w/ the updates. $cheme$. That's why I've stuck with the YuGiOh TCG; I've been playing for more than a decade and I still use pretty much the same strategies as when I first started. Of course, there are different play styles that have come and gone over the years, mainly aimed towards beating your opponent in as few turns as possible, but those are really only popular among the dedicated tournament players; with everyone else, you can use pretty much any deck you want. And, unlike Magic (as I understand it), unless a card is on the Forbidden List (a list of cards deemed too broken to be playable), you can use any of the thousands of cards, be they brand new or the very oldest. From what I read of Magic, you basically have to buy new cards every couple months as older cards get added to the ban list.

yea the whole buying cards to keep up is kind of true. It depends on what you wanna play, my friends and I play Legacy which is basically older cards to the newer ones with a very small amount of cards banned due to them being overly powerful. They have legacy tournaments depending on where your at. What you guys are talking about is if you want to play standard, which is what alot of the tournaments are and thats the newest sets only. Then theres modern which basically you can use cards from 2003 and onward, so you dont have to play catch up and buy the newest sets that often. Its like the happy medium, and probably the most common gametype most magic players play.

I used to. Started with Ice Age and played on and off up to around Ravnica, at which point I kinda drifted away because it had just gotten too damn serious and not enough fun to be worth the cost anymore.
I still have a shoebox full of cards from all over that time period, though I've been thinking of selling the lot...

I play magic and I have done drafts. I have been playing for so many years now, I took a break from it and sold all my cards and then another friend got me back into it. What format are you playing? Standard?

I played magic some 20 years ago... but quickly realized it was a game where whoever had the most money to spend on getting the best cards would win, period. Since I would never be the guy with the most money I got out. I played a lot of Jyhad (Later renamed Vampire: the Eternal Struggle) because that game was less about auto-win cards. Still, have not played that in likely 15 years.

I've been playing on and off since about 2000. Like Sean, money was a holdback and more or less still is. I've also had the misfortune of running up against a lot of not-fun players.
Last spring I picked it up again, but have been too busy with school to dedicate any time to it. My SO and I have gotten a few games in against each other off and on, but haven't done that in a couple months now.
Around the Mirrodin block, it started to really ramp up complexity and unfortunately that doesn't suit me much; once I get out of some fairly casual drafts, I'm hosed.

Yea I'm not gunna lie some of it does have to do with paying for the best cards. I play modern and legacy formats and I'm making a modern red burn deck and its doable but very hard to make this deck competitive for under $100.

Indeed; once you get out of Type 2 formats (standard) prices get real crazy. Thus I stay casual and do the occasional booster draft.
