For the past 6 months or so, I've been training in traditional Shaolin Kung Fu. This afternoon, I was tested for my blue sash. This was my third rank test, but the first where I sparred. In my Jujitsu and Aikido training, we didn't have sparring per se. We did a little randori in Jujitsu, but people had a tendency to get hurt. The sparring today was an absolute blast! In 2 weeks, I'll attend my first straight sword class. I bought a Hanwei Practical Tai Chi sword through the school. Very cool sword Can't wait! Does anyone else here practice Kung Fu?

When I was 14-18 I studied a combination of Kung Fu, Okinawa Kenpo, and Judo. I used to compete in full contact tournies around that time as well... and I loved it. I have not actively practice since that time tho.

I have not actively practice since that time tho. That sounds similar to Kajukenbo. When I studied Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, I sometimes trained with Shihan Joseph Holck's group in Tucson and had some exposure to that art. Very cool! Tai Chi is also taught at the school that I attend. I'll almost certainly study it in the future.

I'll find out and get back to you. I have only trained in Shaolin Kung Fu (Chuan Fa Wu Ling Xing) so far.

Cool, that's the fast one. At the rank test, there were a couple of Tai Chi students testing. I watched one form where they moved slowly for most of the form, but then would suddenly turn and perform what looked like a stepping stool kick, slapping each foot while in the air, and then continue on with their form

The principle behind why most forms of taiji are practiced slowly is found in the sifuism - "slow is smooth and smooth is fast."
You practice form slowly to work on form, body alignment, and moving in accordance with the taiji principles. That way when called upon you can move quite quickly because proper movement has been so ingrained into your muscles.

Congrats on the sash!
I used to practice both snake fist and tai ji chuan, but the school closed due to lack of funds...
Right now I just practice by myself some of the stuff I learned (specially weapons)

Thanks!
The Aikido dojo that I attended shut down a couple of years ago, just before I was to test for my blue belt. It sucks when you find a good place to train, invest your time and effort, only to see it close down.

I too had to discontinue my koryu classes due to work commitments and have taken up Yang style taiji, which I'm enjoying.

I studied Mian Chuan in my youth for many years along with other styles, reaching the grade of instructor by the time I was about 26, today I just do a little Tai Chi from time to time.
