so, how many checked out the incredibly beautiful sword by Go Yoshihiro I posted? I did and I noticed the " price: -please enquire-" It's sweet and going to be very expensive. Actually everything on that site is very high nihontos. Way out of my budget. Most cost more than the car I now own. A very rare, 14th century blade forged by a swordsmith considered to be the greatest student of Masamune. Yeah, I'm guessing it's worth more than my house...

It cut reasonably well, but is/was better suited for harder targets imho. It cut the double roll OK, though I did have to use more force than my Munetoshi Tessen, seeing as the Tessen, while it has some hira-niku, has way less than ths Shinto katana. I felt like I had to "power though" the targets with more hip rotation instead of just letting the blade do most of the work. The Shinto katana could have easily split bamboo imho, but I didn't have any, plus even if I did, I didn't want to potentially damage the sword with a hard target anyway.

That would seem to make sense. A samurai, with one sword, would need for it to perform well no matter the target. The example that I found on YouTube of someone cutting with their nihonto just before a final polish was similar. He said it cut tatami okay, but not as well as his XL katana. But how well would a performance cutter like a Hanwei XL do on a battlefield, against armored opponents? I would certainly want a well designed stout blade that could handle all comers. Thanks for sharing your insight

Here Digs....a little over but not much. I've never met the man but heard good things about him...I think he's a RN....which gives him extra browny points from me. yakiba.com/Wak_Nag_RJ.htmBob

Beautiful blade!
Are there surface cracks above the rust line on the nakago (ura side)? Is that anything to be concerned about?

Shinae isn't a fatal flaw and can be polished out. Which is what I'm thinking. Depends on how picky the person buying it is. Some people won't have it some don't care. Digs may want to ask the fella his opinion about that.

Gosh..I'm sittin here staring at the picture and can't tell if I see some vertical lines in there or not. It's an old sword so I wouldn't get worked up about it. It's not fatal no matter what.

I'd like to thank everyone, and especially "randomnobody", "Robert Bugh" and "Jon Frances" for your help. That naoshi at Aoi was calling me, it was too good to pass on, it might have been one I would have regretted letting go, so I placed the order just a few hours ago. The sun is rising in Japan now, and I'm waiting for the good folks to read my email and tell me we're good to go.
Now I can take my time, do some more research, and get that one special kat.
Thanks everyone! I'll be posting picks in a few weeks.

Just remember: if, for some reason, when you get it, it just doesn't match up to your expectations...I'll be happy to take it off your hands.

Congrats Digs, that's nice to hear. Smith is quite good and you can find info on him. However lately I've been getting bit frustrated about the inaccuracies in AoiArts listings. The information is written in very vague way and it's easy to mix it up if you are not careful. As this seems to be the work of 2nd generation they got the period wrong. While it's nice that they included some information on the 1st gen, I just think sometimes their descriptions are bit confusing to read... Can't wait to see your own pics of it. I like it's shape and it's quite attractive one.

Don't see that often, muneyaki, I think it's called? Didn't read the description, just looked at pictures. I just watched this one go by and have been mourning since: m.ebay.com/itm/141542415114Starting bid was $499. Stayed at $699 for three days, in the last five minutes if exploded. I watched it as it went, just sobbing to myself. Watching a naginata that will probably do the same thing, but I'm also debating shooting an email to Aoi about one of their naginata... Any ETA on your wak?
