I keep coming back to those same naginata blades (the naoshi included) and trying to convince myself I don't want them. It's not working. Luckily, I can't afford them, anyway...or so I tell myself...
Bunch of antiques I'm looking at, but I really need to polish the ones I have...

I too am trying to convince myself I don't need it. Just need a little push and I might get it.

Naginata-naoshi is my favorite. I'd have gotten that one already if I didn't just buy a new scooter. I keep telling myself my next antique will be a full-on naginata, hopefully with koshirae, but the few I've been watching have slowly sold, and it's not looking good. Here's the one naoshi wak I do have, in case you haven't seen it (and because I like to show off, even though it's nothing remarkable): sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/41509/

What makes you desire those particular swords over other options Digs? I'm just asking to see what you are looking for. For 5000$ range there are lots and lots of options of different variety. Putting a limit at 2000$'s makes it a lot harder to find good deals.

Putting a limit at 2000$'s makes it a lot harder to find good deals. That's a good question and good place to start. I would prefer a katana but it's out of my budget. A waki, naginata, or nagamaki naoshi would be fine. Something with some age to it - Edo period or older. Then it's about the shape and hamon. I will display if in my home office so it has to "call to me". No serious kizu and no rust on the blade. The budget is about $2000. Much more than that I probably won't go for it. It would be harder to find deals around $2000. I would appreciate this as an object of history, as something that was made in the far past, something I could never duplicate. I have a small collection of WWI and WWII bayonets. One or so from various counties. I don't know why I like displaying them but I do. It will be a piece that after I buy it I will research everything I can about the period, it's associated history, and the makers.

Just for reference, I got mine at right around the $2,000 mark, but I foresee another grand or so into polishing it... That naoshi at Aoi is just stupidly inexpensive, in that not buying it, if you have the money of course, would be stupid. Especially given the current Yen to US Dollar rate. I want it so bad. I'm tracking a couple others, too, but most are around the $2.5-3k mark and up...

I have been, mostly hoping to stumble over a "decent" blade that needs a bit of rework. Polish especially determines expense for a lot of these, the risk you take is that a blade in rough polish may turn out to have major flaws once you clean it up.
That can be a lot of money down the drain, so I have been trying to find something that needs a re-polish, but still shows enough of the blade to get a decent feel for condition.
The Nihonto market is definitely the deep end of the pool for sword collecting, and there is a LOT of knowledge required.

Getting a reasonable priced katana is something that can be found. The tricky part will be the most important one, will it appeal to your wishes. I agree with you that at least for me the calling part is the most important. You'll know it when you see it. Random made a good point there, as USD is very strong now this is good time for you guys to buy. For us Europeans euro is a all time bottom... We just had a quick chat with a fellow collector before class today about researching purchases, and iIn my opinion it's best to do as much research as you can before buying. Of course in all cases it's not possible as purchase decisions have to be made at fast pace. The good thing about nihonto collecting is that the community is very welcoming. You'll find some good deals that are not that well known to public once you happen to look to the right place at the right time. One NMB member had recently listed 2 wakizashi for consignment at Ian Chapmans site: nihonto.org.uk/Consignment.html I find both of them being reasonable deals. I've been looking some Fuyuhiro pieces lately. That Takada is pretty good deal too. Both have NBTHK Hozon, which makes the price sweeter. Few days ago when the new NMB interface was up I chatted with another UK fellow who'll be probably listing a very affordable Bungo Takada wakizashi for sale soonish when the new interface will be working again (at least I'm remebering it was Bungo Takada... .

I added one more pic that lists the sword's stats from the original listing a few years prior to my buying it from another person.

I like it! Sounds like you got it for a very good price.
Have you performed any cuts with it?

I've used it (with the newer tsuka with leather ito - the original tsuka is badly cracked) for Iaido a few times, and cut a double roll of tatami only once before sending it off to the shinsa. I don't plan on cutting anything other than air with it from now on though since it's much more valuable now than before sending it off to get judged. I was saving up some $ to have it professionally polished to get rid of some minor blemishes/a couple of tiny nicks on the kissaki, but have had set-backs, so that's going to have to wait.

so, how many checked out the incredibly beautiful sword by Go Yoshihiro I posted? I did and I noticed the " price: -please enquire-" It's sweet and going to be very expensive. Actually everything on that site is very high nihontos. Way out of my budget. Most cost more than the car I now own.

That's what I was thinking. If you were planning to send it off to be polished anyway.... If you don't mind, could you describe your impressions from cutting with your nihonto? The description said it is a stout blade. How did it do with the double mat?
