Strange indeed! While I can envision how that would work (either drawing from behind, which I doubt, or moving the scabbard with the left hand for a draw with the edge-up) I can't think why it would be preferable.

This is a good one showing how a Dao was worn.

So the bow holster was worn on the same side? I wonder then if it was not only to make both accessible.

I've seen images of infantry wearing the Dao the same way when not carrying bows.

Western cavalry sabers were also sometimes worn in a similar position.

That it is. The only odd thing is going by artwork the Dao swords tended to be worn with the hilt facing the rear. Qing military (mounted archer) style. Maybe Ming mounted archers did the same; I don't recall seeing a good picture (bowcase and quiver were worn in the same position). Mongol/Yuan mounted archers wore bowcase and quiver the same way, dao on the left hip but with hilt forwards. I've seen pictures of Ming swordsmen on foot, no bows, maybe civilians/bandits/martial artists rather than soldiers, with sword at waist (so worn higher up than cavalry mentioned above), hilt forwards. Probably hung on belt hook, belt around waist (not hips).

Come to think of it, for archers, especially mounted archers, I suppose the hilt could get in the way of the bowstring if worn in the normal way, hilt forward.

Lots of mounted archers wear dao hilt-forwards. It's a Qing/Manchu thing to wear dao hilt-backwards. The Qing/Manchu bow is much bigger than the Ming/Mongol/Song/etc bow, and the bottom tip is at around the upper thigh at full draw. So, there's a good chance the hilt will get in the way at full draw, and keeping the hilt out of the way is a good functional explanation. Also why it's a Qing thing and not a Ming thing.
If non-archer Qing soldiers wear it the same way, then they're copying the archers, non-functionally. Hilt-forward and hilt-backward both appear for Qing soldiers on foot. High-ranking Qing soldiers wear dao archer-style, hilt-backward.
(I checked. Ming archers wear dao hilt-forward.)

That's right. It's been so long since I was looking at this stuff on a regular basis I'm having trouble remembering things I used be able to quote and cite in a heartbeat.

i have a few 2 point harnesses and they are nice , but as other have said it does leave it swinging some. to run with it you need to keep one hand on your hilt . i do like the integrated belt ones, just not with blades that are to long. i also love the Saya tucked threw the belt , something about that just sits and feels comfortable and easy to remove and such.

I have a double-wrap belt I made for one of my swords, but I didn't pull the wrappings around the scabbard tight enough before stitching them up and they've slowly stretched over time. I'm just waiting for the day when the scabbard falls out. I guess I could glue it down, since it's just a DSA scabbard...
I do like baldrics, but I've been too lazy to make any. Only one I have is one I bought at a Ren Faire that unfortunately doesn't really go with any of my current kit options.

I started a thread on my choice regarding this some time ago, sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/23713/ I ended up going with a double belt suspension, very comfortable to wear and didn't hinder my movement.

Here's a quick shot of one of my 2.5 point suspensions. Super compfortable and snug on the hip:
