I mean seriously!! Do they expect people to buy this?? It's from katana1980 and while I know they are certainly not the best ebay vendor, they have done much better than this. This doesn't even look like they even tried. Has anyone actually seen a worse wrap coming straight from the vendor?

Leather is always sloppier looking but this is just underachieving.

Oddly enough, the rayskin actually looks like a fairly high quality panel. But, yeah... The wrap isn't "good" by any stretch of the word.

Leather is always sloppier looking but this is just underachieving. Not if the tsukamaki-shi does the wrap properly. What I see in these pics is: a poorply formed fukura rough cross polish on kissaki no buffalo horn on the koiguchi the ends of the sageo aren't tied or even fused closed and will definitely fray easily horrendous tsukamaki using what looks like single ply leather or pleather with no hishigami and does not alternate. The ito isn't even close to being flush with the rims of the f&k, the wood edges are exposed, the knot pictured, while on the correct side, is extremely sloppy. The samegawa is most likely plastic from what I can see. I wouldn't even want to see what's underneath this tsuka The fittings are gaudy artsfeng looking stuff and most likely cheap alloy. The worst part is that there are many who wouldn't see any difference between this sword and a priceless nihonto. -Josh

I don't think it's plastic. If you look closely, you can kinda see where they sanded the barb things off the rayskin. They look flat on top.

I thought it looked fake too but didn't want to cast a vote without seeing clearer/larger pictures...

Looks like plastic samegawa to me too. Oh, and a piss poor wrap. I've had swords with that i ply pleather and it is terrible.

If my new sword turned up looking like that I would me mighty Peeved off. The edge of the kissaki curves in a little like they polished it too much in that one spot.

Let's see....it is a $200usa sword. The leather is pigskin. And yes, the tsuka needs a re-do on the wrap job. I went and told Tony (Katana1980) that. We shall see what happens. ------ btw, Josh! There you go again, knocking my beloved purveyor of decent, budget fittings...ArtsFeng. I went and bought a new set with a flower theme (tsuba, fuchi, kashira and menuki)...all for about $65usa total. When we were last knocking Arts-Feng, the least expensive recommended alternative to Arts-Feng would have been about twice the price. You have to admit that they do offer pretty (brass) furniture that is a step above the zinc/pot metal furniture of budget sword sellers. If you don't stop knocking Arts-Feng, I might not buy you a set to put on that Juyo grade nihonto (that you do not yet have). :-) Robert

Here's a pic of the tsuka on my mumei Shinto katana - it's wrapped in laquered leather ito Sorry about the size of the pic - couldn't find a larger one on my iPad.

I'm just honestly surprised they would actually takes pictures of this and post them. And close-ups of the ito with pieces of it just sticking out like that. What was someone thinking?

Quite so...that pic of the pigskin leather sticking out....I emailed Tony about it....deserves a re-wrap.

Maybe his good tsukamaki-shi quit or he was told this was the way it's supposed to be done. I'm sure he wasn't really intending to sell this one, eh RinC? -Josh ps - just because some fittings are half the cost doesn't mean they're not also half the value....or twice as gaudy btw, half the times I've gone to the artsfeng website, it's been redirected to a Chinese porn site. Oh well, at least half the time my visits are worth it
