I recently received a Cheness Tenchi which i ordered from SBG. Unfortunately the blade i received has a distinct S curve to it (i will include a picture if it lets me). I emailed the help desk and they informed me the curve was within the acceptable limits but offered me three options. I could return it for full refund, keep it and accept a discount, or exchange it.
My first instinct is to exchange it because it also has a bo-hi when i ordered the solid bodied blade. But i am tempted to accept a partial refund and attempt to straighten the blade myself. Here are my concerns. I have straightened several differentially hardened blades in 1060 and T10 that i bent myself with bad cuts but i have never attempted to straighten a through hardened 9260 blade that was bent during the forging process. If i straighten this blade, will it remain straight? My concern is that a 9260 blade bent in the forge will always return to that original shape after cutting with it.
Thank you for any advice

Exchange it, or return it for a refund. Right now, it's their problem - if you try to fix it, it becomes yours.

I'd tend to agree with hhmoore. You need to consider if the shape it currently has is something you can live with should the straightening fail, either now or after some cutting. Since it's A: damaged, and B: the wrong model, I'd say return or exchange.

Return it. You could gently heat it with a torch (to about straw/light yellow color, about 180°C) and bend in a vice to straighten but that takes a bit of experience and skill.

agreed, 9260 is an alloy spring steel and would be difficult to straighten.

Absolutely exchange/return it. If you can post some pics, I'd love to see what they consider within acceptable limits.

Ok. This is the pic I sent them that they said was within their acceptable limits. This was Cheness's acceptable limits rather than SBG. The picture doesn't capture how bent it really is. In the picture it looks to be a gentle S curve but in reality it appears quite extreme. I just couldn't get a pic that shows it that well. I'm reternng it anyway. There were few things I was expecting out of this blade. I wanted a well tempered 9260 blade with thick niku for heavy cutting practice on 4+ mats and oak dowel. Basically a good beater is all I wanted. But a STRAIGHT beater was at least one thing I expected. That with the bo-hi when I expeced a no-hi blade made me decide to exchange it. I will say though that SBG has thus far been prompt and helpfull with the exchange process. Attachments:

Absolutely return that, yeah. Cheness' QC has slipped in recent times, and their new mission statement on what is acceptable to them is the reason I harp on spending the extra cash on the international transaction fee to order through SBG.

This is my first post on this forum and I already like you guys. I packed the sword up and I'm sending it back for exchange. But now I'm half scared I'll get another crooked blade. If I do, I'll update with pictures.

This time someone will do a better QC to ensure you are happy, some other order will no doubt get your blade in the hope they don't complain. So for Cheness - buy from people like KofA and always ask for a QC check

Yeah, that "what to expect" exposition does not sound very good at all. Reads like a list of excuses and explanations before the fact; does not make me feel confident in ordering from them even though I get that it is trying to give a reasonable understanding of what to expect.

Sword returned, replacement received. This second blade looked dead straight upon initial look. Then I noticed the tsuka at a different angle to the blade. Disassembly revealed a bent tang with the bend roughly an inch from habaki. I took pics. It bent straight easily with a single bend. Almost too easily. Tang not tempered the same as blade? Or bad temper throughout? I'm worried that, though nicely straight now, after a little cutting, it'll continually bend easily around the habaki area. At this point, I'm probably stuck with whatever I've got. But all I really wanted was a durable 9260 beater anyway. Hopefully this blade can fill the bill.
