Do not start practicing anything with a sharp blade, I know a beginner who almost scalped himself with a sharp blade. He was a bit of a know all and thought he didn't have to start with a bokken, after that little encounter he decided that he might not know as much as he thought he did.

Thanks for the info. I have some experienced, but not enough for a sword that size. Like I said, I wanna keep the blade on my wall, and practice with the dull one.

Shmoo: from what Garrett was saying the jian will be in the low to mid $200 mark. I was practising yesterday and managed to hit myself in the head with my wakizashi but only with the flat, I was trying something new and difficult and I got distracted. It can happen to the best of us, a jian and the miao dao are also somewhat complicated to use and you can easily cut bits off yourself if you are not experienced. I have a great deal of respect for the jian and the miao dao and even I treat them carefully when I use them. Food for thought

wraith, don't give false hope I said mid to high 200's a while ago. Since I've been rambling about price increases this translates to high 200's. Probably in the $280 range. oos3thoo, the kogarasu is for collector interest I don't think JSA teaches it anymore. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The miao dao is a rare form as well. There are some resources to learn it though. I think I read something about Scott Rodell writing a book on 2 handed Chinese swordsmanship.

They probably are for collector interest but I want a unique weapon, for my strange fighting styles. (No I am not referring to ninjutsu, but the combination of things I do)

@garrettc I'll be going to a place called "Silent River Kung Fu", it's in Stony Plain. It's a pretty small place but the training is amazingly done. It's also for any age group, and I started when I was only 7, but I had to leave when I was 12 because my mom was unable to drive me there, but thats not a problem anymore =D.
I hope I can keep my money for long enough, because I have around $300, but I'm terrible at keeping large amount of the stuff.
P.S. The Kung Fu style of Silent River is Chuan Fa (a.k.a Shaolin Kempo)

I suffer the same problem as well. The whole "I will buy now or never! (or later)" type of thing.

Food for thought The first adage I learned when I seriously delved more into edged tools is... Respect the blade - it will serve you well. If you disrespect it - it will cut you deep. I agree that in order to train the blade seriously one must first start with a drone that is either made of wood, aluminum, or some synthetic. Whether it be a bokken, sparring foil, saburito, stick, waster, etc... one gets comfortable wielding and manipulating the tool in proximity to the body. Then when one gains some proficiency it is time to move up to something heavier. The progression then leads to a real dulled weapon then a sharp one. If one is going to hit oneself with the training aid then it is better to start with drone. At least it won't be to one's detriment to do so.

i like to trust the judgment of the sword. If you are judged badly, you will cut yourself, if you are judged good, you will be sparred. I care for my sword, I expect it to do the same.
BTW I don't mean literally. But it is just a code I fallow, if I treat my sword like a cheesy tool, I cut myself sometimes.

Well with my Jian (my stupid spring steel one) when ever I swing it around, I never hit myself, even though I get really into it. I guess I do respect the blade, probably because of my mental training in Kung Fu.

Yea. But when I piss around I seem to nearly hit myself or someone else, so I never piss around with my sword anymore.

Thats a good idea. I remember I almost hit one of my sister's friends once with mine when sheathing it in a way I had never tried before.

I also do it in my backyard, but since it is winter I have to wait for the snow to go away. I usually go out 2:00am and practice, when no one can see and no one can get hurt.

I would find 2 am a bit to early to practice with a sword. If I tried that, I would for surely hit myself because I would still be asleep.

Lmao, I usually stay up most of the night. And when I get warmed up, I usually forget I am tired.

I usually stay up late, but I am very mellow while doing so. Talking about hitting ones self, just a moment ago I was just playing around with my sword and almost hit myself right between my eyes. Stopped about a cm in front of my face, got pretty lucky there.
