So, I was lurking the internet and found a really nice tsuba that I think would fit my mumei Shinto katana well. Here are some pictures of the katana, the saya, the tsuba, and the new tsuba I'm thinking about Current saya

nice tsuba you should definitely get it but you should also lose the big seppa so the nice pattern won't be hidden

As William said, it's a good match. A nice and traditional design with style. Get it!

I took the plunge as it were... now to find someone who can mount it correctly.

If I remember correctly you don't have the original tsuka? I think in general it's good idea keeping original koshirae intact as a whole. So at least keep the original parts saved for potential resale.

Jussi, you have an excellent memory! I recently was able to get the original tsuka from the gent who sold the katana to me (it still has the koshirae intact), but it's in OK, not good or great condition. The tsuka has big crack in the wood core, the ito is a little loose, which has caused the hishigami to move and is now visible. Below are some pictures.

That is great to hear. Now you can keep the original koshirae as a whole. While that old tsuka probably wont hold up to any practice use, I think it's valuable to have it as you now have a whole period koshirae for the sword which has a value of it's own too. And good thing is you have the new tsuka made for it for martial arts use, so you can use it safely. Maybe you can use the new tsuba with the new tsuka? Of course I cannot say for sure when the saya and tsuka are made or if they are true match but for my eye they look to be fitting well together. But for collecting purpose I think it's great that you now have it together. I do tend to have good memory when it comes to swords, wish I had as good memory in other fields too.

I like it. The new tsuba still has an aoi-gata shape to it, so it will not clash with the handachi fittings.

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy as hell to have gotten the old tsuba, because as you say, it's now a complete set.
