Lately i imported some silk ito from Japan for a project im working on and it seems totally different to the silk they use on the Ronin dojo pro. I've had and used the RDP for quite some time now and i still haven't noticed any fraying or wear on it. I know silk is suppose to be some pretty tuff stuff so thats normal to not see any wear but you would at least still see little tiny bits of fraying on the ito. BUT on the RDP i can't seem to see any fraying on ito at all? is it Rayon silk, synthetic silk or a 100 percent natural silk on those RDPs? The texture of the RDP silk feels a little plastic like in my opinion, yes it is smooth and feels quite durable and i'm not complaining about it at all i like the ito on the RDP and i'm just curious to know what type of silk it is because it does not feel the same as the silk i imported from Japan. To be honest i'm planning to mount a mumei nihonto and i wouldn't mind using the silk they use on the RDP in my hands it feels great. Can someone more knowledgeable please enlighten me?

I stumbled onto a video on youtube once abut identifying ito. They identified it by how it burned. For example applying flame to the end it turned to ash or melted to a solid plastic. My guess is the RDP is using synthetic silk which from what I've read can come in quite a variety or qualities.

Correct the RDP uses synthetic silk like the majority of stuff coming out of China, I get why you're confused though since the RDP listing states 'Genuine Silk Ito'.
With Japanese silk or even Japanese cotton, you're pretty much guaranteed that the materials is 100% natural. Some people prefer the feel of 100% silk but I find Japanese cotton to be much more comfortable.
Alan where did you get your silk from? Namikawa? Yamato?

Jedi ~ My Ronin DP has a nice rikko shape to the tsuka with a synthetic silk wrap. Haven't seen the video of which you speak, but here is Thomas Buck's burn test info: MaterialsJust remember to take the ito off your sword before setting a match to it

Namikawa - Gold Brown one i don't mind either but i agree Japanese cotton does feel comfortable silk has a nice luster to it. Majority of ito i have is cotton and some tsunami, just thought the silk would be nice on a mumei which is just going to be displayed. I would really like to know where i could source the ito on the RDP from it seems very durable like the tsunami stuff for use on your dedicated everyday cutters.
