At least that's what it looks like to my eye. I don't want to give details about the blade at this time - other than stating that it was not purchased as a "second" or "scratch & dent"; but I'm interested in opinions on what I'm dealing with...and what, if any, effect it will have on the blade. Any input will be much appreciated. Attachments:

Have you removed the Tsuka to see how far up it goes.It looks burnt to me,like localized heat build up from a weld or too much heat from a belt sander :? .It doesn't look good though.

I have not - I just received this. I was really happy with the purchase until I removed the saya & my eyes were drawn to what is shown in the pics.

Maybe a wallhanger? I kid. I would try to contact the seller and ask for some kind of refund/replacement.

Don't take it apart, leave it as is. Send pics to where you got it from and get a refund/exchange immediately (ask nicely). Things get missed all the time with production swords.
Good luck with new sword when it comes.

I've already sent a message to the seller - I wasn't able to include the pics at that time, but he's expecting them. I'm not having the best of luck, lately - this one was purchased with my refund from ProSwords

Looks like a heat mark from grinding, belt sander or what have you, possibly from grinding the shoulders of the tang, if it is one tiny spot you can likely polish it out, but it should not be there.
