I have been working on this for about two weeks while at the same time dealing with a hard drive crash. I was going back and forth between cutting, riviting and reinstalling programs. The articulated joints you see I bought from Ashcroft/Baket. The leather you see attached to those joints is my work. I bougth a side of leather ( about 20 sq feet) from: www.springfieldleather.com/catalog/uncut_leather/tooling_leather/saddle_skirting.aspCost was about $100 for low grade 14 oz veg tan leather. Here are some pictures of my new legs: Here is my new arms: And here is my old body armor which I did not upgrade at this time, but you can imagin how it will all fit together.

The arm armor looks good. With a few gaps at the elbow maybe? But still very good. The legs look great! I've done some leather work too, so I know how difficult those curved lines are to match on both sides. Excellent job! Very professional looking. And it's obvious from the photos that you need a new house, or at least a much bigger apartment, my friend!

I think I need a workshop, lol.
I had to open up the elbow area on the top side to allow for more flexibility. I started out with amost no gab but it was no good. I kept cutting away untill I got full mobility. The inside of the elbow area is not easily hit because it is holding the sword up. The other arm is behind a shield. I usualy don't wear any armor on my shield arm at all. The reason why I made it is because I often switch sword arms between figths of when I fight with a twohanded weapon.

I used a rivitgun with alluminum rivits. I believe they are called "rematches". I did some testing and they seem to hold up well. I plan to keep the rivitgun in my armor suitcase along with a box of rivits and washers for field repairs. Since these are not hammer rivits, I don't have to worry about bringing an anvil with me.
Bingo on the leg wraps !!!

Sounds like a recipe for fast and easy field repairs. What size washers are you using on the outside? They look pretty large (3/4" maybe)?

The washers are a full 1 inch. It is the only size I could find to fit the 3/16 rivits. On a few occasions I made mistakes and had to remove them... that was dam hard, so I have confidence these type of rivits will hold. The easiest way to remove them I found, after much trial and error, was to drill a large hole straight into the head. Then the whole thing can be easily pulled apart.
Eventualy I will get around to riviting the body armor together too. The plates on that are kept in place by strings. That is less of an issue because their are no stress points on the body armor as in leg and arm armor.
Its kind of funny to look at all the paint chips on the body armor and see how much fighting I have done and how much of a beating I have taken. The paint on my shield had completly fallen off and I have just applied a fresh coat of paint.

Awesome armour, very formiddable - obviously designed by experience Your old body armour, is that homemade, modified from other sports equipment, or can you buy that stuff as is? It looks nice and light - how much do the pieces weigh, anyway?

My old armor was made from the same material as my body armor, but it was not very comfortable. Arms and legs need more mobility. I am happier with the leather.
Initially I was putting football pads inside the baseball pants you see me wearing. I have since put a liner inside the leather to hold the pads. I have also dyed the leather black.
Using hockey and football protecting will also work well with some modifications. It will probably end up costing more.

I'm glad you like it. It is very functional and cheap. I protects me from bruises better then some of the expensive armor out there. If you want maximum protection and mobility, you have to make it yourself. It took weeks of fine-tuning to get it right after I initially finished it. Also all armor that is used in combat practice will require maintenance. Rivets will come loose and straps will break. You might as well do it yourself from the start so you know how to make repairs. You also should design your armor so you can make quick repairs on the field.

I extended my lower leg protection after nearly getting my leg broken with an SCA illegal shot with a 5 lb greatsword this past week. That was one lesson learned the hard way. I extended it down so far that my ankles are covered too. I also think that the next time I am ordering from Ashcroft/Baker I will get another set of knees that extend back further and have a higher gage as these are starting to show dents from illegal hits.
